The Atlanta Braves battled back from an 8-4 deficit to score a thrilling 13-9 win over the Washington Nationals. Freddie Freeman drove in five runs while Dansby Swanson connected for a big three-run homer in the eighth.
It wasn’t all great for the Braves however as Mike Foltynewicz struggled again and will reportedly be optioned back to Triple-A. Folty emerged as Atlanta’s ace in 2018 but has never gotten on track after an elbow injury sidelined him in spring training.
Sean Newcomb was scheduled to pitch two innings for Gwinnett Saturday night which would be his first outing since he was struck in the head by a line drive during a spot start last weekend. If all goes well, Newcomb could be back in the Braves’ bullpen this coming week.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Michael Hebert interviews Adam Duvall and discusses his struggles with the Braves last season and how he is turning things around in Triple-A for Gwinnett. Duvall’s goal is to get back to the majors and is doing everything he can to make it happen.
Good news for former Red Sox great David Ortiz as he has been moved out of the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Ortiz is in good condition and still recovering from a gunshot wound that he suffered on June 9 in the Dominican Republic.
The Pirates placed outfielder Gregory Polanco on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to inflammation in his left shoulder. That is the same shoulder on which Polanco underwent surgery on this past offseason. Outfielder Jason Martin was recalled to take Polanco’s place on the active roster.
The Indians designated outfielder Leonys Martin for assignment on Saturday to make room for Aaron Civale on the roster. Martin began the season as Cleveland’s every day centerfielder but has struggled producing a 62 wRC+ while hitting just .199/.276/.343.
