The Braves announced today that pitcher Sean Newcomb was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list, retroactive to Monday. The left-hander was struck in the head on Saturday by a 102 MPH line drive off the bat of Phillies catcher JT Realmuto, then was immediately removed from the game.
The #Braves today placed LHP Sean Newcomb on the 7-day concussion IL, backdated to June 18, and recalled RHP Huascar Ynoa from Triple-A Gwinnett.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) June 19, 2019
The Braves will obviously monitor Newcomb closely in the aftermath of such a traumatic injury, and this IL stint is a testament to their concern. There were reports over the past few days that Newcomb had felt no effect aside from neck soreness, but as with all head injuries, the timetable for concussion symptoms is often unpredictable. We will continue to provide updates as Newcomb nears his return.
