Braves can’t hold onto lead in ninth, lose 6-5 to Phillies
The Braves were down, then they led, then they lost. This team still needs a closer, just like it did in April. Those recurring issues aside, the offense was solid again, scoring five runs highlighted by a missile into the Hank Aaron Terrace by Josh Donaldson, which gave Atlanta a 5-4 lead at the time. The winning streak is over, but the Braves have another shot at the Phillies on Sunday.
Sean Newcomb leaves game in third inning after taking line drive to his head
Sean Newcomb was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of JT Realmuto, which resulted in Newcomb falling to his knees before being removed from the game. Newcomb appeared to be in stable condition as he exited the field, but a batted ball to the head is always of grave concern, especially with an exit velocity of 102 MPH. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sean in the aftermath of a truly scary scene.
Braves option Dan Winkler, promote Huascar Ynoa to the majors
The Braves made a change in their bullpen prior to the game on Saturday, optioning Dan Winkler for Huascar Ynoa to be promoted from Gwinnett. Ynoa was acquired fom the Twins in 2017 for Jaime Garcia.
Shrewd moves make room for high-upside picks
Atlanta has been impressive in their ability to ink high-upside picks from later rounds of the MLB Draft. Players with the talent of draftees such as Vaughn Grissom and Tyler Owens would often go unsigned given the bonus pools allotment given to teams, but the Braves signed both players after agreeing to under-slot deals with their earlier picks.
