Despite abounding frustrations during the afternoon contest, the Atlanta Braves managed to escape with a split during Monday’s double-header against the Washington Nationals. That provides some optimism for the future and, on Wednesday evening, the Braves will send Mike Foltynewicz to the mound with an eye on taking a series lead and, more importantly, lengthening their edge over Washington in the overall standings.

After a handful of shaky starts, Foltynewicz improved greatly in his last outing, allowing two runs over six innings in a win over the Mets. His season-long numbers (headlined by a 3.04 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 118.1 innings) are stellar but, in this spot, the Braves would benefit greatly from a strong performance that also goes deep into the game.

In opposition, the Nats will send Tommy Milone to the bump and the 31-year-old left-hander has only two starts under his belt this season. His performance has been solid in that small sample but, on the whole, the veteran hasn’t been overly impressive in his career and the Braves have the opportunity to take advantage of a left-handed starting pitcher in what appears to be a favorable overall spot.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest.
