The month of August is not when you want to start to see guys hitting the disabled list. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit the Braves in a fairly significant way on Tuesday.
Max Fried, as was reported earlier, had to leave his start far too early due to a groin injury. At the end of the second inning, a hot shot line drive was aimed right at him and in the process of trying to get out of the way, he pulled his groin. He was able to make the play, but immediately left the field and as soon as the staff found out it was his groin, he got pulled in favor of Kolby Allard which did not go particularly well.
The Braves chose to be proactive given that they have a game to play tonight shorthanded in the bullpen and they will likely need a starter for at least Fried’s next turn in the rotation.
The #Braves today placed LHP Max Fried (left groin strain) and RHP Shane Carle (right shoulder inflammation) on the 10-day disabled list. The club recalled LHP Adam McCreery and RHP Wes Parsons from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Both Wes Parsons and Adam McCreery were on the 40-man roster, so them getting called up makes some amount of sense although for McCreery, this is his first call-up to the majors. Parsons has been called up before, but he has yet to make an appearance in the major leagues. Parsons has posted a 2.47 ERA in 20 appearances (17 starts) between Double-A and Triple-A this season. McCreery had only gotten the bump to Triple-A a couple of days ago and has posted a 3.75 ERA in 35 relief appearances between Mississippi and his lone appearance for Gwinnett. Also brace yourselves, because at 6’9 (which might be underestimating) and 250 pounds, he is not a small man.
Max Fried going on the DL isn’t a big surprise given his injury, but Shane Carle could be getting the phantom DL stint due to his recent struggles to keep guys off the basepaths, although he was particularly poor on Tuesday as he gave up four runs and walked four batters so there could be something actually wrong there. Carle has posted a 3.15 ERA in 44 appearances with the Braves in 2018.
