The Atlanta Braves have certainly been working the waiver wire in search of upgrades over the last month or so. The grabbed Rene Rivera from the Angels on a waiver claim (although he won’t be active until after rosters expand) and then they worked out a deal with the Royals to snag Lucas Duda in a deal where the Braves just had to give up a bit of money. It is safe to assume they will keep an eye out for more upgrades until the waiver deadline.
The latter of those two deals is what is relevant today as the Braves, in order to activate Duda, made a roster move.
Rio Ruiz was optioned to create a roster spot for Duda— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) August 30, 2018
Rio is the unfortunate roster casualty as Duda essentially plays the role as a left-handed bat off of the bench with a better track record. It seems probable that Ruiz will get a look as a guy that could get called up when rosters expand, but for the moment Duda is going to be the lefty off the bench as a pinch-hitter and could spell Freddie Freeman at first if the need arises.
Lucas Duda has slashed .242/.310/.413 in 2018 for the Royals.
