Sean Newcomb will look to play the role of stopper again on Friday when the Atlanta Braves continue their series against the Colorado Rockies. The Braves dropped the series opener on Thursday by a score of 5-3. Atlanta carried a 3-2 lead into the ninth but was unable to hold it ending their winning streak.
Newcomb has pitched well after Braves’ losses this season but he will be looking to bounce back from a rough outing last time out. He lasted just four innings and allowed 12 hits and five earned runs against the Brewers. That snapped a stretch of three starts in which he had allowed a total of three runs including his near no-hitter against the Dodgers.
Newcomb faced the Rockies back in April and threw six shutout innings while allowing five hits and striking out nine.
Colorado will counter with left-hander Kyle Freeland who is coming off back-to-back starts in which he has pitched at least seven innings. Freeland has allowed a total of two runs over his last 14 innings and has struck out 15 over that span. He matched up against Newcomb back in April and came out on the losing end allowing seven hits and three runs over six innings.
