Atlanta Braves Minor League Player of the Week: Touki Toussaint

New, 11 comments

Several strong entries for this week, but a pitching performance from a pitching prospect with some of the best stuff in

Jeff Jones

Before we get to this week’s minor league player of the week, a small mea culpa. Dustin Peterson definitely should have been mentioned as an honorable mention last week. A big chunk of his production came from a particularly big game, but he was really good last week (and this week too for that matter before he went on the DL) and the International League Player of the Week should have gotten a shout out. It was just an oversight, but I want to give credit where credit is due.

As for other strong performances this week, I would be off brand and remiss if I didn’t mention that Mike Soroka was really, really good in his MLB debut. MLB performances aren’t really in the spirit of this column, but we wanted to mention him anyways. Bryse Wilson has been lights out all year long as he sports a 0.34 ERA in his five starts. We may do an April minor league All-Stars piece and if we do, Bryse’s dominance would feature prominently. Riley Delgado just keeps hitting, Austin Riley had another strong week as did William Contreras down in Rome. Travis Demeritte has been doing some work as well as his Mississippi teammate Tyler Neslony. Finally, a close second place finish came from Bruce Zimmermann down in Rome. He was electric in a 6.2 IP scoreless appearance for the Braves’ low-A affiliate where he struck out 11 batters. If one were to argue he should win this week, that would be a perfectly reasonable take from our perspective

However, our minor league player of the week award for this week is going to Touki Toussaint. Touki put up one of the more impressive pitching performances in his minor league career (and he has some really good ones to choose from) as he went six innings and gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters for Double-A Mississippi. Touki got the nod this week over Bruce due to putting up a comparable performance against better competition, but we also wanted to highlight just how good Touki has been of late. In his last two starts combined, Touki has thrown 13 innings and has given up a total of five hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out 17 batters. Those are video game numbers.

Congratulations to Touki for winning Minor League Player of the Week! As always, we invite you to post your predictions for next week’s award in the comments with bonus points to those who post stat line predictions. We will shout you out if you get close and maybe make fun of you a little bit if your prediction is hilariously wrong. For example, TarDawg1014 thought that Braxton would have a good week and raise his batting average significantly. I admire your optimism, sir....although Braxton did have a couple big hits recently. I also admire jdawghsizzle for sticking to his guns pulling for Alex Jackson despite his tough start to the season.
