Ozzie Albies and Johan Camargo drove in two runs each as the Atlanta Braves got back in the win column with a 6-1 win over the Miami Marlins.
Sean Newcomb began the game with a 20 inning scoreless streak. That lasted just 1 1/3 innings before the Marlins plated their first run on a Bryan Holaday groundout. Newcomb would settle down from there allowing just four hits and two walks over six innings.
Atlanta’s offense came into the game struggling but they finally broke through against Marlins starter Jose Ureña in the fifth. Nick Markakis led off the inning with a single but was forced at second on a groundout by Kurt Suzuki. Ender Inciarte then reached on an infield single and moved up to second after an error by Starlin Castro.
With runners at second and third, Camargo tied the game with a solid single to right. Dansby Swanson followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Inciarte to put the Braves in front 2-1. After a sacrifice bunt by Newcomb moved Swanson into scoring position, Ozzie Albies came to the plate and lined a two-run single to right to make the score 4-1.
Atlanta added a pair of runs in the seventh on a solo home run by Suzuki and an run-scoring double by Camargo to make it 6-1. Freddie Freeman capped off the scoring in the eighth with his ninth home run, a two-run shot into the Chop House to put the Braves in front 8-1.
Newcomb certainly didn’t have his best stuff but seemed to get more confidence as the game moved along. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.39 for the season. Shane Carle, Daniel Winkler and Jesse Biddle each worked a scoreless inning in relief.
With the victory, the Braves improve to 27-17 on the season. The two teams will meet again on Sunday in the rubber match of the series. Julio Teheran will be on the mound for the Braves while the Marlins will counter with left hander Wei-Yin Chen.
