The Braves have announced that they have claimed left hander Chad Bell and have optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The #Braves have claimed LHP Chad Bell off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. The 29-year-old Bell has been to added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 15, 2018
Chad has four pitches, your typical two-and-four seam fastballs that sit in the low 90s, a slider, and a change-up. He’s pitched as both a starter and reliever, but it seems that he profiles best as a reliever.
Bell hasn’t been particularly effective for Detroit this season - compiling an 8.59 ERA, 2.182 WHIP, but a lot could have to do with some porous defense as his FIP sits at a very respectable 3.82.
To answer the question you’re all thinking - he has a career 4.3 BB/9 rate and he has been sitting around 2.5-3BB/9. With Blair, Dirks, Peterson, Weigel, and Whitley all unavailable (inactive/DL) Bell adds another arm that can be possibly called up and provide innings for Atlanta. With that sound Atlanta defense behind him, especially up the middle, the Braves may have found another decent arm to add to the mix at a very low cost and at worst he provides innings to an injury riddled staff in Gwinnett.
