In a somewhat surprising move, the Atlanta Braves have promoted top prospect Mike Soroka and he will get the start in Tuesday’s series opener against the New York Mets.

Soroka was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday in the case that Julio Teheran was unable to make his start on Wednesday. Teheran made it through his bullpen session on Sunday but promoting Soroka now and pitching him on Tuesday will give Julio an extra day of rest to work with.

Soroka is off to a stellar start for Triple-A Gwinnett going 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA in four starts. He has allowed just 17 hits and five runs over 22.2 innings. Promoting Soroka would give the Braves the three youngest players in the major leagues.

To make room for Soroka on the roster, Atlanta optioned reliever Chase Whitley back to Triple-A Gwinnett.
