Ronald Acuna homers again but Braves drop 2 in split squad action
Ronald Acuna hit his fourth home run of the spring Saturday but the Atlanta Braves fell to the Cardinals and the Phillies in split squad action. Acuna went 1-for-3 at the plate including a towering first inning blast that briefly put Atlanta in front 2-0. Rio Ruiz would add a two-run homer of his own later but Lucas Sims and Anyelo Gomez would struggle in a 10-6 loss.
Sean Newcomb allowed one run over 4.2 innings but the Braves bats fell silent as they mustered just one hit in a 3-0 loss to the Cardinals.
Sean Newcomb has ‘pitched his way on’ Braves’ rotation
Newcomb has pitched well this spring and apparently well enough to secure a part in Atlanta’s opening day rotation. Brian Snitker confirmed as much to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Gabe Burns following Saturday’s outing. Newcomb has allowed nine hits and four earned runs over 15.1 innings this spring.
Weiss brings wealth of experience to Braves
Walt Weiss discusses his return to the Braves with MLB.com’s Joey Johnson.
“It has been great being back,’’ Weiss said. “It’s a great time to be an Atlanta Brave. There’s excitement over the future with a lot of good players in the farm system, the new stadium, all of it.
”I’m happy being here, doing my part. Sometimes, when you’re in the background, you can get a lot done.’’
