With the signing of veteran catcher Brian McCann now official, the Braves needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Ricardo Sanchez, a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher, was designated for assignment on Monday afternoon.
Sanchez, who was acquired from the Angels prior to the 2015 season, has been unable to establish himself in the minor leagues after having some prospect hype early on in his career. He tossed 57.2 innings with the Mississippi Braves in 2018 and posted an ERA of 4.06 with unimpressive strikeout and walk numbers.
The Braves also designated left-handed reliever Adam McCreery for assignment with the signing of Josh Donaldson now official. McCreery, soon to be 26, made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Braves, although he threw just one inning. He has powerful stuff from the left side but has been unable to throw enough strikes to establish himself as a reliable option. You can read more about the Donaldson signing here.
