The Braves added four players to the 40-man roster on Tuesday protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft. Those added were catcher Alex Jackson and RHPs Patrick Weigel, Jacob Webb, and Huascar Ynoa. There was a flurry of 40-man roster activity around the league and MLB Trade Rumors has a complete list.
Braves reliever Jonny Venters was named NL Comeback Player of the Year on Tuesday. Venters made it back to the majors after missing five full seasons due to injury. Atlanta acquired Venters in a trade with Tampa Bay in July and he pitched well down the stretch. He is arbitration eligible this offseason and figures to be back in the Braves bullpen in 2019.
Kyle Muller pitched across three levels in 2018 and capped it off with a stint in the Arizona Fall League. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Gabe Burns talked with Muller about his season, his goals and pitching in Arizona.
Atlanta signed free agent outfielder Ryan LaMarre to a minor league deal. He will hope to go to spring training and compete for a bench role. LaMarre spent 2018 with the Twins and the White Sox hitting .279/.322/.382 in 180 plate appearances.
Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre announced his retirement on Tuesday after 21 seasons in the majors. Beltre was undecided about his future at the end of the season but elected to walk away on what has surely been a Hall of Fame career.
The San Diego Padres made a couple of moves on Tuesday and were rumored to be involved in on-going trade discussions. First, the team dealt reliever Colten Brewer to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor-league infielder Esteban Quiroz.
The Padres also have an agreement to sell the contract rights to third baseman Christian Villanueva to Japan’s Hanshin Tigers.
The Padres are also reportedly discussing a potential trade with Seattle that would bring shortstop Jean Segura and RHP Mike Leake to San Diego in exchange for outfielder Wil Myers.
