The first installment of the Talking Chop Prospect List was unveiled on Monday, and if you have not been following along with our prospect team, you should definitely do so. This portion of the list includes several high-upside arms, including one who has already debuted in Atlanta.
I included this in the Braves section because the title all but names the Braves as the reason the Marlins can salvage their offseason. The piece discusses the nightmare that has occurred in South Florida this winter, but breaks down a scenario in which the Marlins actually trade for a substantial return.
Certainly any team would love to have Yelich but the Braves can offer a bounty of pitching prospects like Kolby Allard, Kyle Wright and Joey Wentz that no other team save the Chicago White Sox can and who aren’t likely to trade any of Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez or Dylan Cease. Atlanta also has one of the top position player prospects around with Ronald Acuna.
It’s a steep price for Atlanta to even consider one of these players, especially Acuna or Allard, and in light of what the Marlins received for Ozuna, they will certainly try to make the deal without either top prospect.
Mike Petriello of MLB.com lists his top five pitchers who are set to impress in the upcoming, listing Braves left-hander Luiz Gohara among them. Smart man.
So why, despite a Top 25 xwOBA that was the equivalent of Carlos Martinez or Lance McCullers Jr., did he have a 4.91 ERA? In part because almost no other starter in baseball had a bigger gap between the quality of contact allowed and the amount of hits that found holes, which could point to poor defense or just bad luck. We'll take bets on the 21-year-old with a magical left arm finding some better fortune in 2018.
This list has barely changed since October.
