Atlanta Braves trade Matt Kemp to Dodgers in clear salary dump
Some thought it wouldn’t be possible but new Braves general manager was successfully able to unload Matt Kemp in a five player deal that netted Atlanta pitchers Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir, first baseman Adrian Gonazalez and infielder Charlie Culberson. Atlanta designated Gonzalez for assignment and the team now has a full 40-man roster.
What the Matt Kemp trade means for the Braves
This is largely a financial move for both teams who each have very different goals. The Braves take on quite a bit of salary for 2018 but add some flexibility for what will likely be a much more appealing free agent class next offseason. Atlanta also fills a couple of stated needs with the addition of McCarthy who is likely to open the season in the rotation and Culberson who can slot in as a utility infielder.
