The Braves will try to avoid a sweep tonight at the hands of the streaking Indians, laying their hopes on Joel De La Cruz in his major-league debut. The Indians counter with Danny Salazar, who is second in the AL with a 2.40 ERA.
The Indians are riding an 11-game winning streak, which they last accomplished in 1982, and are 20-6 this month while also hitting .317 during their streak and slugging 21 home runs. Their 5-3 win yesterday was only the sixth time in their last 29 games in which they failed to hit a home run.
Danny Salazar has been their number one guy this year. In only three starts has he allowed as many as three runs, and has allowed only 56 hits in 86.1 innings, and has surrendered just six home runs all year. If he has one weakness, it's walks; his 4.5 BB/9 is the highest among the starting rotation, and is tied for the fifth-most walks in the Majors (43). Still, the Braves will have their hands full against a pitcher who is all but a lock for the All-Star Game.
Joel De La Cruz had a 2.16 ERA over his last four starts at Gwinnett after starting the season as a reliever.
