Giants vs. Braves preview: Atlanta hosts San Francisco in search of second consecutive series victory

New, 3 comments

The Braves face a tall task on "getaway day" against the Giants.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves have an opportunity to do something they haven't yet done during the 2016 season. That previously unthinkable outcome? Winning two series in a row. The Braves took care of business over the Miami Marlins over the weekend, and after winning two of the first three games against the San Francisco Giants to begin the current match-up, Atlanta has the chance to close things out on Thursday in a matinee affair.

Unfortunately for the Braves, it will be a significant challenge, as the Giants send their best pitcher to the mound in this particular spot. Madison Bumgarner is a former World Series MVP with an unblemished "big game" profile, and he happens to be a pretty good pitcher in the regular season as well. The left-hander enters today's game with a 2.12 ERA over 72.1 innings this season, and Bumgarner has been remarkably consistent, allowing two earned runs or fewer in each of his last eight starts.

Aaron Blair will get the ball for Atlanta in this contest, and while he certainly isn't an "even" match-up with Bumgarner, there are signs of life. The 24-year-old struck out five batters while allowing only two earned runs against Miami in his last outing, and that was a welcome sign from Blair after a legitimate blow-up (9 ER, 1.1 IP) against the Pirates.

Facing a high-end left-handed pitcher is the absolute nightmare of the Atlanta Braves in 2016, and for a 12:10 pm ET start time on a Thursday, this could be a quick, painless experience if Bumgarner gets it going. Still, it would be nice if Atlanta could string together another win in an underdog spot.

Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest, and let's do this together.
