In a move that surprises no one Chris Ellis was promoted to AAA Gwinnett today.
Ellis, obtained alongside Sean Newcomb in the Andrelton Simmons deal, has been wonderful for Mississippi sporting a 2.75 ERA and 1.131 WHIP. While there’s nothing that stands out about the guy, 6.98 K/9 and 4.00 BB/9, there’s no way to deny the success he’s had this season. Despite his relative good luck, .244 BABIP, his FIP is still a respectable 3.55. He’s already proved to be a workhorse as he threw 140.2 innings in just his second year of pro baseball.
The corresponding move while a bit surprising, isn’t that surprising when you look at what he’s done in Gwinnett and that’s Lucas Sims transferring back to Mississippi. After a great start to his AAA career, including an 11 strikeout game in his second start, his season has fallen apart. He has since pitched 4 games where he’s registered a game score of under 40, and is coming off of the worst start of the season where he gave up 9 hits and 7 runs in 3.2 innings (16 game score).
The pristine mechanics Sims showcased in Rome have seemingly disappeared and this move down to Mississippi could help him regain the confidence, and mechanics, he has lost - keep in mind he is still just 21 years of age.
