How do you rebound from a game like that?! The Braves look to make it two(!!!) in a row against the Reds and salvage a series that features a sport that is technically baseball. It wasn’t pretty but the Braves have stayed mentally strong coming back from a lot of deficits lately so hopefully they can take care of this game early and have a nice easy day. To do this the Braves send out Matt Wisler who is looking to rebound from a pair of truly bad starts. Coming in to June, Wisler had a very respectable 3.16 ERA while limiting opposing batters to a .607 OPS. His two starts in June: 14.63 ERA & 1.317 OPS. To say it simply - he has been awful. A quick look at some of his metrics show he’s struggled to miss bats with his change and curveball to the point that he has 0 whiffs on those two pitches in June. Monitor those two pitches closely and you have an idea if we are going to get May or June version of him. Reds have had exactly one at-bat against Wisler and that is by Adam Duvall - who struck out.
The Reds counter with Dan Straily who for his career has allowed a .353 BAA all Braves players. Straily throws a 4-seam fastball(90 mph), slider(84 mph), curveball(74 mph), and changeup(83 mph). His slider is his bread and butter and so far in June has a whiff percentage around 13%. He’s coming off of two great outings against the Nationals (7IP 2H 2ER 2BB 3K), and Athletics (7IP 5H 1ER 3BB 5K) despite the low whiff percentage on all four of his pitches. Expect a ton of contact, and hopefully the Braves can get luckier than the rest of the league (.226 BABIP for Straily).
Of note Erick Aybar is 6-for-14, Tyler Flowers is 1-for-3, Jeff Francoeur is 0-for-3, Nick Markakis is 0-for-1, A.J. Pierzynski is 5-for-13, and Brandon Snyder is 0-for-1 - all against Dan Straily.
