Gwinnett Braves 6, Norfolk Tides 4
- Ozzie Albies, SS: 1-4, run, RBI, .245/.293/.374
- Rio Ruiz, 3B: 1-3, BB, .251/.349/.358
- Tyrell Jenkins, RP: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2.97 ERA
Gwinnett used a team effort on offense and defense as they beat Norfolk 6-4. Lucas Harrell only lasted 4 innings and gave up 6 hits and 5 walks but did limit the damage to 3 runs before giving way to the bullpen. The pen gave up just one run in relief including a 2 scoreless innings appearance from Tyrell Jenkins as he continues to adjust to bullpen life in the hopes that it will get him to the majors sooner.
On offense, Gwinnett got contributions from up and down the lineup. Ozzie Albies has now hit safely in 5 straight and reached base in 9 straight games as he added an RBI and a run scored as well. Rio Ruiz continues to try to be on the comeback trail with a hit and a walk. Emilio Bonifacio and Anthony Recker added multi-hit games for Gwinnett and accounted for 4 of Gwinnett’s 6 RBIs between the two of them.

Probable Starters: Gwinnett - Manny Banuelos, Norfolk - Ariel Miranda
Mississippi Braves 2, Jackson Generals 3 - F/13
- Dansby Swanson, SS: 0-5, .242/.327/.383
- Dustin Peterson, LF: 1-5, HR, .266/.333/.416
- Victor Mateo, SP: 6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 4.26 ERA
Mississippi Braves fans have been getting their money’s worth at games of late as they went to extras again, this time falling to Jackson 3-2 in 13 innings. Victor Mateo was excellent over 6 innings in terms of limiting damage as he gave up just 2 runs despite giving up 9 hits....giving out zero free passes certainly helps. We got the good version of Mauricio Cabrera on this night has he pitched two scoreless innings while walking none and striking out one.
Dansby Swanson has struggled of late and is now hitless in four straight games, which is a testament to how little triple slash lines means this early in the season and/or with small sample sizes. Given variance as well as some very real personal issues (the loss of Donny Everett hit the Vandy program very hard), there’s no reason to worry about Dansby as the season progresses. Dustin Peterson is streaking again and now has hit safely in 7 straight games as he added his 6th homer of the year. Willians Astudillo didn’t strike out or walk, which is pretty much par for the course.
Next Game: 6/12 hosting Jackson @ 5:00 PM CST
Probable Starters: Mississippi - Chris Ellis, Jackson - Brett Ash
Carolina Mudcats 7, Winston-Salem Dash 4
- Braxton Davidson, RF: 0-4, .214/.304/.316
- Joey Meneses, 1B: 3-5, 2B, 4 RBI, .319/.385/.444
- Chase Johnson-Mullins, RP: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 2.77 ERA
Joey Meneses exploded on offense as Carolina took down Winston-Salem 7-4 Raymar Navarro was excellent over 5 innings with two earned runs, in particular at limiting hard contact despite only striking out two batters. Carlos Salazar had a rough night giving up two runs in relief, but Chase Johnson-Mullins came in and restored order as he got his 7th save and was almost perfect over the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Joey Meneses went bonkers in this game as he had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs on the day. He was certainly helped that the 1-3 hitters for Carolina reached base 10 times in the game, but it was nice to see the production out of him anyways. Only two batters for Carolina went hitless, but one of them sadly was Braxton Davidson who continues to struggle at high-A, although he has been showing signs of turning things around of late before this game.
Next Game: 6/12 hosting Winston-Salem @ 2:00 PM
Probable Starters: Carolina - Matt Withrow, Winston Salem - TBA
Rome Braves 7, Greensboro Grasshoppers 10
- Austin Riley, 3B: 3-4, 3B, RBI, 2 runs, .259/.309/.382
- Carlos Castro, 1B: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, .177/.203/.435
- Ricardo Sanchez, SP: 2.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 6.34 ERA
Ricardo Sanchez had another rough outing and despite admirable production on offense, Rome fell to Greensboro 10-7. Ricardo continues to alternate good and bad starts and unfortunately today was a bad one as he failed to escape the 3rd inning and gave up 8 hits and 3 walks as Rome fell in to a 7-0 hole that they could not overcome. Oriel Caicedo came in and gave up three unearned runs before Josh Graham and Bladimir Matos finished the game with two scoreless innings of relief.
While he had yet another error (his 14th) in the field, Austin Riley seems to be turning things around at the plate as he went 3 for 4 with a triple(!). He has now hit safely in four straight and is hitting .368 over his last 10 games including 4 multi-hit games and striking out a total of 9 times. Carlos Castro added a two-run home run and Alejandro Salazar is staying hot as he had a couple hits to raise his line to .285/.308/.317.
Next Game: 6/12 at Greensboro @ 4:00 PM
Probable Starters: Rome - Kolby Allard, Greensboro - Chris Paddack
