The Atlanta Braves staked starter Mike Foltynewicz to an early lead and they held on late for a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants struck first as Brandon Belt connected for a solo home run in the second inning to put San Francisco in front 1-0. The Braves quickly answered against starter Jeff Samardzija. Adonis Garcia led off the inning with a sharp single and advanced to third on a double by Nick Markakis. After a Kelly Johnson strikeout, the Giants opted to intentionally walk A.J. Pierzynski to load the bases. Samardzija struck out Foltynewicz but Mallex Smith came up with a big hit as he tripled to left to put the Braves in front 3-1.
Atlanta added two more in the third as Gordon Beckham scored on an error by Belt at first that allowed Markakis to reach safely. Kelly Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Freddie Freeman and pushed the Braves' lead to 5-1.
Foltynewicz was in control for much of the afternoon. He retired nine straight after the Belt home run and 12 of the next 13 hitters he faced. The Giants had two runners on in the sixth after a Joe Panik single and a Matt Duffy hit by pitch. However, Foltynewicz gathered himself and struck out Belt to end the threat.
Hunter Pence led off the seventh with a single and Brian Snitker elected to pull Foltynewicz after 89 pitches. He allowed three hits and one run over six innings to go along with four strikeouts and just two walks.
Ian Krol and Hunter Cervenka came on and retired the next six batters in order before Arodys Vizcaino ran into a bit of trouble in the ninth. Vizcaino retired Connor Gillaspie to start the inning before Belt beat the shift with an opposite field single. Pence followed with a single to right before Brandon Crawford scored Belt with a single of his own to center. Ender Inciarte's throw to the plate eluded Pierzynski and allowed Pence and Crawford to move up 90 feet and into scoring position.
Vizcaino came back to strike out Jarrett Parker before Buster Posey reached on an error by Kelly Johnson at second. Pence scored on the play to make the score 5-3. However, Vizcaino recovered and got pinch hitter Kelby Tomlinson to ground into a fielder's choice at third to end the rally and the game.
Foltynewicz picks up his second win of the season. Samardzja falls to 7-3 after allowing six hits and four earned runs over five innings of work. Nick Markakis had two hits including a double for the Braves. Smith's triple was his third of the season.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday night with Matt Wisler scheduled to start for Atlanta. The Giants will counter with right hander Jake Peavy.
