It has been more than 10 days since the Atlanta Braves played in front of their home crowd at Turner Field, but on Tuesday, that lengthy absence comes to a halt. The Braves return home to begin a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers, and the team will send its "ace" to the mound in the form of Julio Teheran.
While plenty of people have poked fun at Teheran's ace distinction this season, the right-hander has actually performed in a way becoming of the title in recent days. Over his past six starts (since April 20), the 25-year-old boasts a lights-out 1.15 ERA in 39 innings of work, and Teheran has struck out 33 batters with only nine walks during that time frame. As a result, his season-long ERA (2.73) is beginning to look impressive in its own right, and while this recent surge probably isn't indicative of his actual ability, it is very nice to see Teheran pitching with this level of effectiveness.
On Tuesday, the Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson to the mound, and he has also been quite good this season. The 26-year-old right-hander holds a 3.07 ERA (1.18 WHIP) over nine starts in 2016, and Nelson is coming off his best start of the year in which he cruised through 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball against the treacherous Chicago Cubs lineup. Right-handed starters are always preferable when it comes to this Atlanta lineup, but Nelson is no push-over and this should be a fun pitching match-up between two quality young pitchers.
Stay tuned throughout the day for all the latest, and let's do this together.
