(21-22) Gwinnett Braves 4, (22-21) Charlotte Knights 1
Rio Ruiz, 3B: 0-3, BB, .259/.339/.367
Jace Peterson, CF: 2-3, 3B, 3 RBI, BB, .170/.278/.277
Ozzie Albies, SS: 1-3, HBP, SB, RBI, .250/.296/.408
Lucas Sims, SP: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 5.46 ERA
The top 2 hitters drove the lineup tonight, with Ozzie Albies continuing a spell that has now seen him hit in 7 of his last 8 games. Having now adjusted to the AAA level, he is starting to put up the numbers that we’ve come to expect of him, hitting .305/.359/.508 since an 1-17 start to the level. Jace Peterson produced his best day at the plate since his demotion, with 2 hits (one a triple), a walk, and 3 RBIs to lead the offense. Emerson Landoni also added 2 hits on the day, and is 9-24 since his promotion from AA.
Lucas Sims managed to escape a few innings scoreless-with the help of his relievers in the 5th-but didn’t have a great day with 4 walks and 4 hits in 4.1 innings. He had to be removed after throwing 89 pitches (49 for strikes) and has not seen the success yet that he had in AA. Jose Ramirez relieved Sims and pitched through 2.2 scoreless, earning the win in the process. Brandon Cunniff and Chris Withrow finished out the day with a scoreless inning each to give Gwinnett the win.

(17-25) Mississippi Braves 4, (19-22) Mobile Baybears 9
Dansby Swanson, SS: 1-3, BB, .289/.394/.482 in 2015
Dustin Peterson, LF: 0-3, RBI, .247/.316/.422
Johan Camargo, SS: 0-4, .252/.315/.344
Chris Ellis, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2.89 ERA
Mississippi wasn’t able to succeed on either side of the ball against the Baybears. Dansby Swanson had a hit and a single to reach base twice, but that was one of only 3 hits in the game for Mississippi. They scored most of their runs off of 4 errors by Mobile, with 3 scoring on a bases loaded misplay by the left fielder. I think that sentence makes sense. Anyway, Dian Toscano actually reached base 3 times in the game, the only time he’s done that this season, and Mel Rojas Jr had the other hit in the game. Honestly, guys, the offense isn’t very good here.
Chris Ellis Struggled in the game with 6 runs allowed, though from a tipster who was at the game I am told he didn’t allow a ton of hard contact. He wasn’t helped by defense either, as they didn’t make a ton of plays behind him. Steve Kent pitched well for the second straight outing out of the bullpen, and struck out 4 batters in his 2 innings of work. He allowed 1 unearned run. Bradley Roney finished off the game, and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in his inning of work.
Next Game: 5/20 at (19-22) Mobile Baybears @ 8:05 PM ET
MIS: Sean Newcomb (1-2, 3.83 ERA)
I find Sean Newcomb’s name a bit ironic, as he has very short hair and never would actually need a new comb.
(16-24) Carolina Mudcats 2, (12-28) Wilmington Blue Rocks 8
Keith Curcio, RF: 1-4, RBI, SB, BB, .271/.335/.382
Stephen Gaylor, CF: 1-3, BB, .211/.348/.224
Braxton Davidson, RF: 0-2, 2 BB, .213/.301/.315
Ryan Clark, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 4.40 ERA
Carolina didn’t do a whole lot well in this one, committing 3 errors to go with that 8-2 loss, and got blown off the field by a team that came into the game 11-28. That is not ideal. Braxton Davidson provided the offensive highlights via walk. Keith Curcio and Stephen Gaylor worked a solid 9-1 combo (not in that order) both going 1-3 with a walk. Curcio stole a base in the game as well, his 10th of the season. Prior to his 1-3 today, Jordan Edgerton had been 1 for his last 21.
Matt Withrow’s fantastic start to the season has dwindled now to a 1-4 record (which is actually impressive for this team), and today was a struggle. He allowed 5 runs (3 earned) in 4 innings, with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. He was lifted after 85 pitches for Raymar Navarro, who gave up 3 runs in 1 inning on 5 hits and a walk. Chase Johnson-Mullins finally was the first to work clean, with 2 perfect innings striking out 2 before Zack Bird finished off the game for Carolina.

Say it with me “POVSE DAY (pronounced Posey in case you live under a rock of any color though blue would be appropriate for this game)”
(16-25) Rome Braves 5, (19-22) Augusta GreenJackets 8
Luke Dykstra, 2B: 2-5, RBI, .319/.367/.391
Jonathan Morales, C: 0-4, BB, RBI, .315/.344/.427
Austin Riley, 3B: 2-5, 2B, RBI, .241/.295/.390
Ricardo Sanchez, SP: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 5.55 ERA
In kind words this season has been slightly worse than anticipated for Rome, and this game was pretty much that. Austin Riley looked good at the plate with a double and another hit, but committed his 9th and 10th errors of the season, bringing his fielding percentage lower than .900. Woof. Luke Dykstra just keeps hitting every single baseball ever, but as indicated by his ISO they aren’t going all that far. As for everyone else, Justin Ellison had a nice day at the plate with a 1-3 performance and drew 2 walks.
As for “well that didn’t go as planned” I give you Ricardo Sanchez. I’ve made it no secret that I think highly of Sanchez, but last night didn’t fit that bill. He allowed 7 runs and didn’t make it out of the second inning, although 1 of those was unearned and 3 were runners that he had left to the bullpen. Not all his fault, but still not a good day. Trevor Belicek allowed those runs to score, but didn’t allow any of his own to score striking out 4 in 3.1 scoreless innings. Dalton Geekie gave a good performance with 2 scoreless innings, and Taylor Lewis ended the Rome Braves by allowing a run in 2 innings.

ROM: Touki Toussaint(1-3, 5.97 ERA)
AUG: Michael Connolly (0-1, 4.05 ERA)
Here’s a stat for ya-As indicated above in case you decided not to read the first time for some reason, Touki Toussaint has a 5.97 ERA on the season. That is bad and he justifiably has a 1-3 record. Look at Mike Soroka now, and wow he has a 1-4 record I can’t imagine how bad he’s been. Oh wait he has a 2.32 ERA. Repeat after me: “PITCHERS WINS ARE DEAD”
