Cardinals vs Braves preview: Atlanta hosts St. Louis in search of first win

The Braves are looking for their first win of the year and Matt Wisler gets the next crack.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves are winless.

The St. Louis Cardinals (!) are winless.

Let's play baseball!

The Cardinals invade Turner Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday evening, and both teams are searching for their first positive result. Atlanta was "swept" in a two-game series by the Washington Nationals this week, while the Cardinals managed to drop all three games to the Pittsburgh Pirates to put themselves in a nice hole with regard to the NL Central race.

Of course, it is (very) early to start talking about win-loss records, but it would be nice to see the Braves pick up a victory, and Matt Wisler will have the next crack at providing Atlanta with that win. Though pitching has not been the problem over the first two games (shout-out to Bud Norris), Wisler has a difficult task ahead of him in facing this Cardinals lineup, and the 23-year-old will be looking to build on a nice Spring and an up-and-down rookie campaign in 2015.

The Cardinals will send 29-year-old left-hander Jaime Garcia to the mound, and while health has been an issue for the southpaw in recent years, he is quite effective when available to pitch. Garcia boasts a 3.31 career ERA, and in 2015, he was lights-out with a 2.43 ERA across 20 starts and 129.2 innings. Moreover, this will be the first opportunity for Atlanta's left-hand dominant lineup to face a lefty on the mound, and that could pose problems for the likes of Ender Inciarte and others with career platoon splits.

In terms of pitching match-up, this might be the most likely victory for Atlanta during the course of the three-game set, and that places a bit of additional emphasis on the festivities. It will be interesting to see what happens on the field, and Braves fans are undoubtedly excited to see what Wisler can bring to the table in year two. Stay tuned throughout the evening for all the latest in this space.
