Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: Offense silent while Whalen has strong start

Small slate of games this evening with only Gwinnett and Mississippi in action and not much going on for the Braves in either game.

(10-9) Gwinnett Braves 0 @ (10-7) Columbus Clippers 4

Box Score

  • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 0-4, 2 K, .358/.411/.537
  • Tyler Moore, 1B: 2-4, 1 2B, .241/.292/.362
  • Williams Perez, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Second straight quiet night down on the farm as Gwinnett only managed 4 hits and fell to the Clippers 4-0. Williams Perez made his return to AAA on this night and the results were reasonably predictable. The "Williams Perez Experience" typically involves a lot of baserunners and Williams giving up less runs than he really should and he did not disappoint. It was nice to see the 5 Ks in as many innings, but he certainly has some work to do down at Gwinnett before he will be able to make a case to get back to Atlanta barring an injury.

On offense, it was not pretty as Mike Clevinger and co. stifled the Braves' offense all evening. Rio Ruiz saw his 8 game hitting streak snapped at 8 games while Tyler Moore had two of Gwinnett's four hits on the evening. Ronnier Mustelier added another double to give Gwinnett another scoring chance, but it was just not to be on this night.

Next Game: 4/26 @ Toledo Mud Hens @ 6:35 PM

Probable Starters: Tyrell Jenkins - Gwinnett, Thad Weber - Toledo

(14-4) Biloxi Shuckers 5 @ (6-13) Mississippi Braves 0

Box Score

  • Ozzie Albies, SS: 1-4, .333/.400/.431
  • Dustin Peterson, LF: 0-4, .260/.321/.397
  • Rob Whalen, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 4.05 ERA

More of the same in this one as well as Mississippi's bats fell silent and lost to Biloxi 5-0. Rob Whalen had a very serviceable start as he went 6 strong innings while striking out 5 and giving up just 2 earned runs. The former Mets prospect has yet to give up more than 3 earned runs in a start this season although his control has at times eluded him. The recently demoted Madison Younginer had a rough relief appearance where he gave up 3 earned runs while Kyle Kinman returned from the DL with an innings of scoreless relief.

On offense, Mississippi only managed two hits. That was bad. One of those hits was by wunderkind Ozzie Albies. That was good. Ozzie is the league leader in hits and among the league leaders in AVG and OBP despite being the youngest player in the league...which is also good. Dustin Peterson was held hitless while Willians was also hitless but also did not walk or strikeout to continue his unusual string of basically always putting the ball in play.
