Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: Morales, Dansby lead impressive night for prospects

New, 66 comments

Last night was a great night for prospect watching as multiple prospects had big nights at the plate as well as on the mound.

(10-5) Gwinnett Braves 1 vs (6-8) Charlotte Knights 2

Box Score

  • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 2-4 K, .377/.431/.547
  • Tyler Moore, 1B: 1-3 BB, .255/.288/.383
  • Jose Ramirez, P: 1 IP, 1H, 3K,
There is not much to recap in this one as Knights pitcher Jacob Turner completely stifled the offense (7IP 4H 1BB 5). Emilio Bonifacio collected his 13th hit of the season in just 9 games, along with his 7th stolen base. The 30 year old has had a strong season in Gwinnett with hopes to catch back on with the big league team. Rio Ruiz collected two more hits and the young lefty is absolutely mashing AAA pitching to the tune of .377/.431/.547. He has made a few small adjustments at the plate including re-positioning his hands prior to the pitch and it seems to have paid huge dividends. He showed up to camp in great shape, was aggressively placed in AAA, and has thrived.

Joel De La Cruz and Kanekoa Texeira piggybacked off of each other and had solid contributions limiting the Knights to just 1 unearned run over 5. Atlanta bullpen hopefuls Danny Burawa (1IP 1H 1BB), and Jose Ramirez did a good job in the later innings, but it was all for naught as Brandon Cunniff (1.2IP 0H R 0ER 2BB) struggled with his command walking two (one intentional) before a walk off grounder to first (you read that right).

Next Game: 4/22 @ 7:05 PM. Probable Starters: Gwinnett - John Gant, Charlotte - Miguel Gonzalez

(5-10) Chattanooga Lookouts 2 vs (5-10) Mississippi Braves 4

Box Score

  • Ozzie Albies, SS: 1-4 RBI, K, .350/.409/.450
  • Dian Toscano, RF: 1-4 R, .182/.217/.364
  • Johan Camargo, 2B: 2-3, 2B, R, K, .268/.375/.317
  • Brandon Barker, SP: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Matt Marksberry, P: 1.2 IP 0 H, 3 K

Despite a pair of errors by the defense Mississippi was able to win this one thanks in large part to four double-plays. Johan Camargo was the lone player to have a multi-hit game and after the season really slowly he has registered 6 hits in his last 4 games including his second extra base-hit. Ozzy extended his hitting streak to 7 games in which he has collected 11 hits. Willians Astudillo continued his impressive 0:0 BB:K ratio - yet to do either in 46 PA on the season, truly remarkable. Dian Toscano now has hits in 4 of his first 6 games after a lengthy layoff due to visa issues.

Brandon Barker was impressive again picking up his first win of the season despite having a 1.06 ERA & 1.188 WHIP. Bradley Roney was victim to some porous defense as he gave up just 1 hit but yielded 2 unearned runs. He has been strong this year when he limits his walks - registering a 1.235 WHIP despite just yielding 3 hits in 5 outings. Matt Marksberry was impressive allowing no hits and picking up 3 strikeouts. lowering his WHIP on the year to .578. I continue to believe he will be called up soon to the big league team as he has done a remarkable job against lefties and is steadfastly improving against RHB.

Next Game: 4/22 @ 8:00 PM. Probable Starters: Mississippi - Lucas Sims, Biloxi Shuckers - Adrian Houser

(6-8) Carolina Mudcats 5 vs (7-7) Myrtle Beach Pelicans 6

Box Score

  • Dansby Swanson, SS: 2-4 HR, 2B, 3RBI, R,BB, .344/.420/.541
  • Keith Curcio, CF: 1-5 2B, R, .344/.382/.459
  • Tanner Murphy, C: 2-4 .138/.194/.138
  • Ryan Clark, P: 5IP 6H 3R 2ER 3BB 3K
Ryan Clark got some revenge from his short start against Myrtle Beach on the 16th by limiting the Pelicans to 3 runs, two earned, over 5 innings. He left the game with a 5-3 lead unfortunately Zach Quintana had his roughest game of the seasoning allowing Myrtle Beach to walk off 3 run homerun.

Offensively Dansby Swanson stole the show. The young SS registered two extra basehits, including his first homerun of the season - an inside the park homerun. Keith Curcio continues his good work in the leadoff position collecting another double and scoring once - the 23 year old CF is enjoying his finest professional season by registering an .861 OPS. On the other side of things Braxton Davidson continues to struggle. Braxton went 0-3 including 2 strikeouts - his 22nd strikeout in 15 games. Braxton is struggling mightily (sub .500 OPS) and isn't displaying that same strikezone awareness he did last year (4BB:22K).

(4-11) Asheville Tourists 1 vs (5-10) Rome Braves 14

Box Score

  • Ronald Acuna, CF: 1-3 HR 3R, 2BB 2RBI, .291/.361/.364
  • Austin Riley, 3B: 2-5 HR, R, RBI, .246/.279/.474
  • Jonathan Morales, DH: 2-4 GS, 5RBI, 2R, .352/.357/.463
  • Luke Dykstra, 2B: 2-4 R, RBI, .314/.364/.412
  • Alejandra Salazar, SS: 2-3 3R 2RBI, .275/.293/.300
  • Ricardo Sanchez, SP: 6 IP 3H 1 ER 2 BB 5 K
Where to start? A fantastic start by 19 year old Ricardo Sanchez was overshadowed by an absolutely dominant performance put on by the offense. Rome capitalized on errors, and tormented the entire Asheville pitching staff to the tone of 14 runs on 13 hits. Rome connected for 4 extra base hits including 3 homeruns. Austin Riley, mired in a slump, broke out for 2 hits including his 2nd homerun of the season which was an absolute moonshot that hit off the top of the board.. Jonathan Morales continued his incredible start to the season by mashing his first professional GS and collecting 5RBI. Not to be overshadowed tantalizing prospect Ronald Acuna connected on his first homerun of the season a laser of a hit to the opposite field - he's very good..

On the other side of the ball Ricardo Sanchez turned in his best start of the year and limited Asheville to 3 hits over 6 innings. The young lefty has already made significant strides since last year, and hopes to build off of a strong start to the season. After giving up 5 runs against them on the 16th, Trevor Belicek was a strike throwing machine limiting the Tourists to 3 hits over 2 innings and striking out 3 (23 strikes on 30 pitches). Grayson Jones rebounded from a rough game by registering a perfect 9th (1IP 0H 1K).
