Bullpen falters as Braves lose momentum and end four-game streak
The Braves looked promising early, as Julio Teheran was throwing to ace form while battling flu-like symptoms. However, the offense coming to a screeching halt along with Braves bullpen blunders led to the Dodgers being victorious by a 5-3 tally. Jason Grilli looked uncomfortable in his appearance as he had two runs credited to his line, and Freddie Freeman's slump continues as he struck out four times.
Braves option Williams Perez, recall Casey Kelly
Williams Perez had started twice within a span of four days, so the Braves brass believed that it would be beneficial to add an extra arm for long relief, and they have done just that. RHP Casey Kelly has been taken from Gwinnett's roster, and seems to be a viable option for a bullpen role. In starting with the AAA club last week, he threw seven innings of shutout baseball. Kelly is the pitcher that was acquired in exchange for catcher Christian Bethancourt from San Diego this offseason.
Aaron Blair or Mike Foltynewicz could start Sunday vs. Mets
As a result of adding Casey Kelly for bullpen depth, the Braves are short a starter for the next few days. Therefore, they will either have to use Ryan Weber, or minor leaguers Aaron Blair or Mike Foltynewicz for Sunday's matinee against New York. Both of these pitchers present their own cases to start, as Blair, who would be making his MLB debut, hurled 7.1 innings of no-hit baseball for Gwinnett on Tuesday night. Foltynewicz's experience at the major league level and some quality outings so far with Gwinnett this season will give him room to believe he will be starting against the NL East foe Mets.
Adonis Garcia day-to-day with sore knee
Braves third baseman Adonis Garcia was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to a sore knee. Garcia suffered the injury in Tuesday's game when he was hit by a pitch by Dodger starter Alex Wood. The knee was sore on Wednesday and the Braves elected to play it safe although Garcia did get in as a pinch hitter late. He is considered as day-to-day and could return to the lineup as soon as Thursday.
