(3-2) Gwinnett Braves 5, (4-1) Durham Bulls 6 F/11

Box Score

  • Matt Tuiasosopo, 1B: 3-5, 2 HR (3), 2B, 2 RBI, .318/.385/.818

  • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 2-4, BB, .263/.364/.316

  • Casey Kelly, SP: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 7.20 ERA

  • Ryan Weber, RP: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA

The Gwinnett Braves ended a tough day for the minor league system with the toughest loss of the group, an 11 inning heartbreaker. It appeared early on that Durham was going to cruise to an easy win, scoring 4 runs in the first 3 innings off of starter Casey Kelly. Kelly settled down for the next 2 innings, and was relieved by Ryan Weber who shut down the Bulls for the next 4 innings. The scoring for Gwinnett started in the 4th, with a Tyler Moore single scoring Matt Tuiasosopo, and the Braves tacked on 3 more in the next 2 innings with Tuiasosopo homering in the 6th.

The game stayed tight at 4 until the 11th, when Tuiasosopo again homered to put Gwinnett up 6-5 and bring David Peterson on for his second inning of work. After a dominant first frame, Peterson lost all control in the 11th, walking 2 and allowing Durham to walk the game off on a Carlos Corporan base hit. In positive news, Rio Ruiz has begun to show his abilities at the plate, and although the extra base hits have yet to come by showing he can handle AAA pitching at 21 years old he has really helped his stock. Ruiz currently is riding a 4 game hitting streak, and once he begins to show a power stroke could move to the top of the order.

(1-4 Mississippi Braves 1, (4-1) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5

Box Score

  • Ozzie Albies, SS: 1-4, 2B .364/.391/.409

  • Dustin Peterson, LF: 1-3, 1 RBI, BB, .300/.391/.400

  • Brandon Barker, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA

  • Jason Hursh, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA

Mississippi suffered its first rain delay of the season, and didn't stop with a 15 minute delay to the start of the game. To make up for the lack of production through the first 4 games, mother nature stepped up with a 3 delay afternoon, approaching her own team record for delays in a game. Through the poor weather, Brandon Barker posted a solid outing, something he got us used to last season. Pensacola managed to score the first run of the game in the 3rd, but Mississippi did tie the game in the 5th. After doubling to push his hitting streak to 4 games, Ozhaino Albies was scored on a Dustin Peterson base hit.

That lead lasted long in time, but short on the scoreboard, and after the third rain delay Pensacola tacked on a run in the 6th inning. The wheels fell off for Steve Janas in the 7th when he allowed 3 runs before being pulled, and Mississippi was unable to gain any ground after that. Jason Hursh has his first positive outing of the year, working a full frame allowing just one hit while striking out two, and Bradley Roney continued his High walk, high strikeout pitching with a scoreless inning and a third.

(2-3) Carolina Mudcats 4 vs. (1-3) Wilmington Blue Rocks 6

Box Score

  • Dansby Swanson, SS: 2-4, 2 2B, RBI, .333/.394/.524

  • Braxton Davidson, RF: 0-3, RBI, .167/.273/.222

  • Joey Meneses, 1B: 2-4, .333/.364/.333

  • Zach Quintana, SP: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 5.06 ERA

The Mudcats helped finish the sweep of the system, handing Wilmington their first win of the season. The rain delay upset the balance in the rotation, and spot starter Zach Quintana had a rough outing in his High A debut. Carolina took a lead in the top of the first, but quickly had that erased by Wilmington's 2 run bottom of the inning. After tying it in the 5th, Carolina saw Wilmington answer back with 3 runs, and then another in the 6th to build a lead the Mudcats could not overcome.

Dansby Swanson was one of the bright spots in the day's game, with 2 extra base hits. He has more doubles than strikeouts through 5 games, and has had multiple hits in 3 of 5 games. The Mudcats were hurt by 4 errors in this game that led to 2 unearned runs being scored. Carolina comes back tomorrow with Enderson Franco on the mound, hoping to recover from a horrific first start of the season.

The Rome Braves game was canceled and will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.
