Mike Minor's 2014 season is over after the lefty underwent exploratory shoulder surgery on Wednesday. The surgery revealed a slight tear in his labrum and he will now undergo four to six months of rehab before starting a throwing program in September.
Eric Stults was tagged for two more home runs in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that Atlanta will spend the next few days evaluating Stults place in the starting rotation. A couple of off days in the schedule will allow the Braves to skip Stults next turn in the rotation, but could turn to top prospect Max Wisler or Manny Banuelos after that.
With a pair of scheduled off-days sandwiching this weekend's series against the Marlins, the Braves have the attractive option to simply skip Stults' next turn. But if they opt to replace him in the rotation during the following turn, the top two replacement candidates would be Matt Wisler, who is regarded by MLB.com as the club's top pitching prospect, and left-hander Manny Banuelos (No. 11).
The thought of using Jose Peraza in centerfield was scrapped once the club became confident that Mallex Smith could be the team's centerfielder and leadoff hitter as soon as next season, according to Mark Bowman. As far as a potential promotion for Peraza goes, Bowman says that the Braves have been clear that they have no intentions of rushing Peraza to the major leagues.
