Devin Mesoraco's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth off Braves closer Jason Grilli delivered a 4-3 win for the Reds. Mike Foltynewicz had another strong start going 6 2/3 while allowing six hits and three runs while striking out seven. Nick Markakis, Kelly Johnson and Jace Peterson finished with two hits each.
Fredi Gonzalez showed some confidence in young pitcher Mike Foltynewicz Tuesday night sending him back out for the seventh inning with a one-run lead Tuesday night. Foltynewicz's throwing error in the seventh proved costly for him and the Braves, but it was another good performance from the young hurler. He talked about the throwing error following the game with MLB.com's Mark Bowman:
"I haven't [fielded a bunt] all year, and I just didn't have a good grip when I threw it," Foltynewicz said. "It just kind of sailed on me. In that situation, you've got to make that play. Unfortunately, I didn't. That one is on me."
Jason Grilli returned to the mound on Tuesday for the first time in nearly a week and surrendered a walk-off single in a 4-3 loss to the Reds. Back spasms kept Grilli out of last weekend's series in Washington but he said he was fine on Tuesday albeit a little rusty. Following the game, Fredi Gonzalez talked with Mark Bowman about the decision to use Grilli in the ninth of a tie game.
"I thought it was a perfect time to do it," Gonzalez said. "I'm assuming they didn't pitch [left-handed reliever Tony] Cingrani earlier in the game because he wasn't available. [Closer] Aroldis Chapman was out of the game. We were going to face the bottom of their lineup with Grilli. It was going to be our bullpen against their bullpen for the 10th [inning]. Not every situation does it make sense, but I thought this one was a good one."
It seemed to be inevitable but the official word came down on Tuesday that Mike Minor will undergo surgery on his troublesome shoulder. Minor has battled fatigue and inflammation for over a year now with no luck. The timing of this injury raises the question that he might have thrown his last pitch in a Braves uniform.
The New York Post's Joel Sherman reports that Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will meet with his agent on Thursday to discuss whether or not to request the Rockies for a trade.
