Game Thread 5/12: Braves vs. Reds

New, 506 comments

The Braves look to build on Monday's win when they take on the Reds on Tuesday evening.

The Atlanta Braves got back into the win column on Monday night, riding Shelby Miller, Andrelton Simmons and a ninth-inning rally to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The same two teams will be mixing it up on Tuesday in game two of a three-game set, and this time, the focus will be on the two young starting pitchers.

Mike Foltynewicz takes the ball for Fredi Gonzalez and company in game two, and Tuesday marks only the third start of the right-hander's Major League career. Results have been mixed for "Folty", with a 5.23 ERA in 10.1 innings, but the 23-year-old was largely effective early in his last start, and it will be interesting to see how Gonzalez treats him with regard to a leash on his innings and/or pitch count.

On the other side, Cincinnati counters with 25-year-old Anthony DeSclafani, who has been excellent in six starts since arriving via trade from Miami. The right-hander has a 2.50 ERA in those outings (36 innings), and the Braves will deploy Kelly Johnson in the clean-up spot (sure, Fredi) as a potential deterrent. Throw in an appearance from Eric Young, Jr. and things could get weird in Cincy.

The weekend series with the Nats left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, but the Braves could go a long way to toward regaining their footing with back-to-back wins, and that is the charge on Tuesday. Stay tuned throughout the night.
