The Nats did it to the Braves again, snatching a win right out from under their noses late to pull off a sweep with a 5-4 win.
Washington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning against Alex Wood, who showed signs of having another short outing. He narrowly missed giving up a two-run homer to Bryce Harper, instead allowing a run-scoring double that glanced off Cameron Maybin's glove and high off the wall. Ryan Zimmerman and Wilson Ramos followed with RBI hits. Wood looked shaky, but actually settled down nicely after that, pitching into the seventh inning.
Atlanta took advantage of a hittable Jordan Zimmermann following a one-out walk to Alberto Callaspo in the second; Jace Peterson then singled with Cameron Maybin chasing home Callaspo with a two-out single later in the inning. Alex Wood even helped himself with a run-scoring hit, his first of three (!) hits in the game. In the third, Peterson tied the score with an RBI single after another one-out walk.
The score would remain tied until the seventh, but Wood was in jeopardy in the fifth with two on and two out and Bryce Harper batting. His picking off Dan Uggla at second base (which had to be reviewed) preserved the tie for the time being and the Braves were rewarded in the seventh.
Freddie Freeman led off the seventh with a single followed by Jonny Gomes, pinch-hitting against lefty Matt Grace. Gomes lifted a drive high to right field and Bryce Harper, in Jordan Schafer-esque fashion, had the ball drop behind him. Alberto Callaspo was able to flare a single behind first base after that and finally give the Braves the lead.
Despite giving up the walk-off homer on Saturday, Cody Martin was summoned to pitch the eighth. This is typically Jim Johnson's role, but for some reason he wasn't available. Martin ran into trouble immediately, giving up a leadoff single to Ian Desmond and then walking Jayson Werth. He did manage to get Bryce Harper out, but Ryan Zimmerman burned him with a game-tying single and Wilson Ramos delivered the final blow with an RBI double.
