Earlier this month, we discussed the Rule V draft and its implications on each team's 40 man roster. In the article, we predicted that 3 players would be added by the Braves to the 40 man roster: Mallex Smith, John Gant, and David Peterson.
Well, as it turns out, we got two out of three right.
OF Mallex Smith and RHP John Gant have been added to the #Braves 40-man roster. There are now 38 players on the 40-man roster.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) November 19, 2015
The move will protect Mallex and Gant from being selected in the upcoming Rule V draft and their additions were widely expected. Its a little surprising that the Braves didn't add Peterson as well, but with the offseason having the potential to be a busy one...its possible the Braves wanted the extra roster space to be able to absorb new acquisitions. Peterson did have a successful season in the minors as a reliever, but does not profile as a shutdown reliever so the Braves probably see him as expendable.
No, this does not mean that Mallex and Gant will be playing with the Braves on Opening Day in 2016. Tyrell Jenkins and Mauricio Cabrera were on the 40 man roster for the entirety of 2015 and did not play a game with the big club. These will, in all likelihood, be the only players the Braves name to the 40 man roster in advance of the winter meetings as the deadline to add players is Friday at 11:59 PM EST.
