Arizona Fall League Recap: Lucas Sims dominates again

New, 7 comments

Lucas Sims has been fantastic for Peoria this fall, and continues to get better with every outing. Connor Lien contributed a hit for the Javelinas as well today

(6-19) Mesa Solar Sox 0 vs. (10-12) Peoria Javelinas 1

Connor Lien, CF: 1-3, 1 K
Lucas Sims, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Peoria's pitching dominated the Solar Sox lineup all game in their 1-0 win. Peoria had a few blown chances to take the lead early in the game, namely Chance Sisco getting thrown out at home in the 2nd inning. Finally though, after 8 innings of doing nothing, Peoria walked off in the 9th. Sisco redeemed himself with that one, knocking a double that scored DJ Peterson to give Peoria a win.

Connor Lien had a pretty good day for Peoria today. He singled in his first at bat in that 2nd inning, before being stranded at second when the runner was thrown out at home. He grounded out to second in his next at bat before striking out in his final at bat.

Lucas Sims did not have a pretty good day, rather he dominated yet again for the Javelinas. The first batter of the game singled off of Sims and from there on he locked down. He forced a strikeout to end that first inning after JT Riddle was caught stealing for the second out. The second inning was a bit boring with a ground out and 2 outs but no runners reached. He came out in the third with his strikeout stuff working. He struck out Daniel RObertson and Jaycob Brugman, allowed a hit, and then struck out Mark Zagunis to end the inning. Sims has pitched in 5 games this fall and in all but one had at least as many strikeouts as innings pitched. After struggling in 2014 he reclaimed the strikeout numbers he showed in his early career in this regular season and has carried that into his stint with Peoria. Perhaps more importantly, he hasn't allowed a walk in his last 2 outings, and only has 3 walk in 14 IP this fall. He has yet to have to be removed in the middle of the inning, and in his last 3 outings has gone a total of 9 IP, with 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 11 K. That is dominance in the truest sense of the word. Sims is the second youngest pitcher in the league, and has the 5th lowest ERA (1.93) of any player with 14 or more innings pitched.

Peoria is next playing against the Glendale Desert Dogs tomorrow at 12:35p MST/2:35p EST. Starting for Peoria is Red's prospect Nick Travieso, who is 0-0 on the year with a 2.12 ERA. Brian Holmes with be opposing him for the Desert Dogs. The Larenceville, Georgia native is 1-0 on the year with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings. Peoria will hope to take advantage of Holmes wildness, as he has 11 walks to 10 strikeouts this fall.
