Gwinnett Braves: 1 at Norfolk Tides: 2
- José Constanza, LF: 1-4, .283
- Todd Cunningham, CF: 0-2, BB, K, 2 OF assists, .274
- Joey Terdoslavich, 1B: 1-4, K, E (7, fielding), .256
- Brandon Boggs, DH: 1-4, K, .247
- Sean Kazmar, 3B: 1-3, .330
- Gus Schlosser (L): 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 9:3 GO:FO, 4.00 ERA
- Jorge Reyes: 2 IP, H, 2 K, 2:2 GO:FO, 4.61 ERA
Norfolk topped Gwinnett in a 2-1 pitchers duel yesterday. Gus Schlosser started and went six innings for the G-Braves and had a decent outing, allowing a pair of runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four. He did a nice job of generating ground balls, which limited the damage done against him. Jorge Reyes was solid in two innings of relief work, allowing only a single and striking out two hitters. Gwinnett's offense was largely shut down yesterday, as the team only managed five hits and a walk. Jose Constanza, Joey Terdoslavich, Brandon Boggs, Sean Kazmar, and Ozzie Martinez each singled, but there wasn't too much else happening. I think that's called the "Phil Gosselin Departure Effect," or something. Gwinnett is off until Thursday due to the AAA All-Star Break.
Mississippi Braves: 7 vs. Mobile BayBears: 8 (10 innings)
- Mycal Jones, CF-RF: 2-6, R, 2B (16), 2 K, .269
- Gustavo Núñez, 2B: 2-4, R, 2B (6), 2 RBI (19), K, .299
- Matt Kennelly, C: 2-4, R, 2B (7), RBI (19), .307
- Barret Kleinknecht, 1B: 3-5, R, 2 RBI (23), .293
- Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 2-4, 2B (24), RBI (31), BB, K, .310
- Ryan Weber: 5 IP, 13 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 8:1 GO:FO, 4.28 ERA
- Ryne Harper (L): IP, 2 H, ER, 2 K, 0:1 GO:FO, 3.09 ERA
Despite seven runs, Mississippi lost a slugfest to the BayBears in extra innings. Ryan Weber had an ineffective night, allowing thirteen hits in only five innings of work, which almost miraculously only led to four runs being scored against him. Cody Fassold allowed three more runs in a 1.2 inning outing, and then Ryne Harper surrendered the decisive run in the tenth. Kyle Kubitza had another solid game offensively, with a double, a single, and a walk in 5 PAs. I was looking at Kubitza's numbers earlier, and saw one of the most insane things that I've seen on a player's stat line. His BABIP, almost 300 at-bats into the season is.....wait for it.... .420. That obviously won't last despite improvements in his LD% and GB%, so beware when looking at the .310 average. Myke Jones, Matt Kennelly, and Gustavo Núñez also had two-hit days, and Barrett Kleinknecht picked up three. Mitch Atkins pitches for Mississippi against the BayBears tonight in the series finale.
Team World: 2 vs. Team USA: 3
- José Peraza, 2B: 1-2, infield single, K
I just wanted to touch on Peraza's showing in the MLB Futures Game here, as he was the only Brave to participate. In his first at-bat, against Team USA's Henry Owens, Peraza grounded a ball to third base that looked like a routine out, but his speed (combined with Kris Bryant's glacially slow release of the ball) turned the hit into an infield single. I clocked Peraza at 4.05 seconds from home to first, which is quick, to say the least, and got people on Twitter talking.
My goodness Jose Peraza is fast.
— Chris Crawford (@CrawfordChrisV) July 13, 2014
Peraza then struck out in his second at-bat on a nasty breaking pitch by Hunter Harvey, and was lifted from the game to get another player some time. It wasn't the sexiest showing from Peraza, but one-game samples aren't worth anything anyway.
Lynchburg Hillcats: 7 at Myrtle Beach Pelicans: 1
- Eric Garcia, 2B: 2-5, RBI (18), .275
- Will Skinner, CF: 1-5, 2 R, HR (9), RBI (40), K, .276
- Emerson Landoni, SS: 1-3, 2 R, BB, .359
- Tyler Tewell, C: 2-3, 2 R, 2B (8), HR (6), 3 RBI (34), BB, .280
- Blake Brown, RF: 2-4, RBI (3), CS (3), .283
- Daniel Watts (W): 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 5:5 GO:FO, 4.94 ERA
- David Peterson: IP, H, K, 2:0 GO:FO, 8.31 ERA
- Alex Wilson: IP, H, 2:0 GO:FO, 1.96 ERA
Lynchburg won convincingly over the Pelicans yesterday, grabbing a 7-1 win. Daniel Watts took the mound for the 'Cats and tiptoed out of trouble, allowing only one run on a solo homer despite allowing four hits and three walks. Overall, it was a decent outing for him. Benino Pruneda, David Peterson, and Alex Wilson combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen after Watts' departure. Tyler Tewell had an excellent offensive game, doubling and smacking his sixth homer of the season. He also walked. Will Skinner got in on the action with a home run of his own, his ninth of the campaign. Blake Brown and Eric Garcia also had a two-hit game apiece. The Hillcats wrap up their series at Myrtle Beach tonight with Jarrett Miller on the bump.
Rome Braves: 9 vs. Hickory Crawdads: 4
- Johan Camargo, SS: 2-5, 3B (4), 2 RBI (24), K, E (23, fielding), .254
- Victor Reyes, DH: 3-4, 2 R, .266
- Sean Godfrey, CF: 1-3, RBI (1), .455
- Sal Giardina, C: 2-4, R, 2 K, .277
- Connor Lien, LF: 1-2, 2 R, HR (2), 3 RBI (18), BB, .243
- Chris Diaz: 4 IP, 3 H, BB, 3 K, 7:1 GO:FO, 2.08 ERA
- Brady Feigl: 1.1 IP, 3 K, 0:1 GO:FO, 3.50 ERA
Rome won their game against Hickory last night to take two of four from the Crawdads. Chris Diaz made a solid, if brief, start, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out three Crawdad hitters. Brady Feigl also had a nice outing at the end of the game, recording four outs without allowing a baserunner, three via the strikeout. Rome brought the lumber yesterday, tallying nine runs. Johan Camargo tripled, singled, and drove in a pair of runs, but also committed his twenty-third error of 2014. Victor Reyes had a three-single game, and Connor Lien hit his second home run of the season and also walked. Rome is off today, but they begin a series against Greenville tomorrow.
Danville Braves: 6 vs. Elizabethton Twins: 10
- Yeudi Grullon, 2B: 2-4, 2 R, BB, E (1, missed catch), .375
- Jordan Edgerton, DH: 2-4, 4 R, 2B (6), .368
- Mike Dodig, 1B: 1-4, RBI (7), BB, 3 K, .281
- Alejandro Piloto, LF: 3-5, 3 RBI (12), K, .327
- Fernelys Sánchez, RF: 1-3, 2B (4), BB, .224
- Max Povse: 2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 3 K, 3:0 GO:FO, 5.40 ERA
- Ian Stiffler: 2 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1:1 GO:FO, 12.27 ERA
- Carlos Salazar: 2 IP, H, 2 R (0 ER), BB, 3 K, 1:1 GO:FO, 2.70 ERA
Danville dropped a slugfest to Elizabethton by a 10-6 final yesterday. Max Povse started on the bump and had an ugly line, allowing three runs in only two innings, ceding five hits and striking out two. Nathaniel Stoltz of Fangraphs was at the game and had this to say about his repertoire.
Povse hits his pitch count two batters into the third. Worked 90-92 T93 with life, near-avg change 82-84, playable slurve 78-81.
— Nathaniel Stoltz (@stoltz_baseball) July 13, 2014
He also had these comments about Ian Stiffler, who worked two innings and allowed a run, and Carlos Salazar, who struck out three and allowed an unearned run.
Ian Stiffler worked two frames for Danville. 89-91 T92, varies CB 75-82, flashes a CH 79-81.
— Nathaniel Stoltz (@stoltz_baseball) July 13, 2014
Carlos Salazar out of the pen for Danville. 93-94, filthy change 76-77.
— Nathaniel Stoltz (@stoltz_baseball) July 13, 2014
On the position player side of things, Jordan Edgerton had another strong game while serving as the DH, doubling and singling in four tries. Alejandro Piloto had a three-single day, and Yeudi Grullon had two of his own. Fernelys Sánchez also had one hit, his fourth double of the campaign, and a walk. Andry Ubiera goes for the D-Braves in their series finale against the Twins tonight.
