The Braves took two of three from the Colorado Rockies in the first meeting between the two teams this year, although it very easily could've been a sweep.
Gavin Floyd pitched another great game, but again was not rewarded with a win (not that a pitcher's wins mean much anyway). He pitched into the seventh inning without a walk while striking out seven. Perhaps the unlikeliest of players expected to contribute a game-winning hit did just that in Gerald Laird. "G-Money" was making his fourth straight start and singled in the deciding run in the eighth inning to secure the win.
The middle game of the series was perhaps the most disappointing. Looking at Juan Nicasio's numbers against the Braves, one would have deduced this game to feature an offensive feast. Instead, Atlanta's bats did nothing despite being given several opportunities to capitalize. Nicasio walked four in six innings, but kept the Braves off the scoreboard while saddling Mike Minor with the loss.
In return, Julio Teheran punished the Rockies for denying the Braves a sweep by shutting out the Rockies on just four hits. The Braves broke out their home run bats and swatted four dingers, two of them by Evan Gattis. Teheran has now pitched 15 straight scoreless innings.
Jason Heyward's 11-game hitting streak came to end. He had raised his batting average from .206 to .247 before the streak ended on Saturday. B.J. Upton continued to show improvement at the plate. He was 4-7 in the first two games and struck out only once in the series, his first strikeout in a week.
Andrelton Simmons is in a funk at the plate with just one hit in his last 15 at-bats.
Justin Upton continued to stay hot at home. His three hits in the series gave him nine on the current home stand, which translates to a .391 avg in addition to 10 RBI. Five of those nine hits are for extra bases (2 doubles, 3 HR).
Despite owning the Rockies in his career, Freddie Freeman was pretty quiet in the series, notching just three hits without an RBI.
Chris Johnson had another one of his tantrums again. All I have to say is, he better learn his lesson this time.
