This is the Cole Hamels we're all used to seeing.
Hamels struck out nine in throwing his 13th career complete game, a 5-1 win over the Braves in the opener of a three-game series.
He and Julio Teheran battled through the first five innings, but the Phillies would strike first: Hamels helped himself in the third, hitting a one-out triple just out of the reach of B.J. Upton and scoring on the second hit of the game by Jimmy Rollins.
One run was plenty for Hamels, but Cody Asche inflated the lead with a three-run homer in the sixth. Atlanta could only manage four hits through seven innings against Hamels, two of them by Jason Heyward.
Carlos Ruiz drove in the fifth run with a ninth-inning single. Hamels lost the shutout when he allowed ninth-inning doubles to Justin Upton and Chris Johnson.
Only one Atlanta baserunner reached third in the game and of Atlanta's six hits, four were doubles. Five runners were left on base.
