Arizona Fall League Recap: 11/7

Kyle Kubitza caused a lot of trouble Wednesday night in Scottsdale

Salt River Rafters 4, Scottsdale Scorpions 7

  • Robby Hefflinger LF: 0-4, 2K
  • Kyle Kubitza 3B: 1-3, 3B (1), BB, R, E
  • Elmer Reyes SS: 2-3, BB, K
Scottsdale came out on top Wednesday night, 7-4, after a big, five run, second inning. Kyle Kubitza and Elmer Reyes both did well at the plate. Kubitza collected one hit, ripping a triple past the first baseman just beating the throw into third. He also walked, raising his AFL OBP to .404. In the field he botched a ball fielding at third, but was able to collect himself and show off his great arm to get the runner (originally was called safe, but was overturned by instant replay which has just been introduced to AFL). Kubitza was in fact involved in FOUR (!) different replay reviews, one involving his own base running blunder (link).

Elmer Reyes reached three of his four times at the plate, singling twice. The almost 23-year-old is putting up a .366 OBP thus far. Robby Hefflinger didn't exactly shine, going hitless in four plate appearances, striking out twice. He now leads the league in K's with a whopping 26. Strikeouts aren't always a bad thing if you can supplement it with a good eye at the plate (BB's) and enough power when making contact. This is something in which Hefflinger will need to improve upon at the upper levels. None of the organizations pitchers appeared in the game.

Scottsdale will again take on Salt River tonight with Aaron Northcraft getting the start. In five startes he's thrown 13 innings with a 15:10 strikeout-to-walk, allowing 13 runs.
