The Solar Sox trounced Scottsdale Wednesday, as Mesa's pitching staff held the Scorpions to a mere five hits and no runs. Elmer Reyes and Tommy La Stella started up the middle for the Scorpions, both collecting a single in four trips to the plate. La Stella committed his second error in the AFL, a fielding miscue that was put into play by Cubs prospect Wes Darvill. Shae Simmons and John Cornely each pitched an inning. Simmons allowed two hits and a flyout, fanning two. Cornely made things interesting by walking three batters, but he managed to Houdini his way out of trouble by inducing a strikeout and two groundouts, escaping without allowing a run. Cornely served as Lynchburg's closer this season, finishing 34 games and collecting 11 saves. The righty out of Wofford College has shown an ability to miss bats thus far in the minors, striking out 214 batters in just over 142 innings of work. Mitigating factors include age and a penchant for free passes, but Cornely potentially has some value due to his ability to get swings and misses via a short arm action and high arm slot that allows for some deception.
Scottsdale once again takes on Mesa tomorrow afternoon.
