It's not a big trade, just a minor league trade, but it's a trade nonetheless. The Atlanta Braves traded double-A outfielder Christian Marrero to the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder Brian Friday... and today is Saturday, though this may have happened yesterday, which would have been even more interesting (for a minor league trade).
Friday was at triple-A for the Pirates, and will be assigned to the Braves triple-A club in Gwinnett. He was a third round pick in 2007 out of Rice University, and has been in the Pirates system the entire time, spending the last three years at triple-A.
This is a minor league trade, so it's nothing to get too excited about, these things happen quite often as organizations shift players around to fill needs. Friday is not a prospect, and was hitting only .232/.324/.304 this year, and has a career minor league slash line of .263/.352/.372. He's kind of like Drew Sutton with no power, which once again begs the question, "why did we trade Drew Sutton?" A: Unanswerable.
The Braves acquired Marrero from the White Sox at the end of March for cash considerations. He was also not a prospect.
The Braves also signed minor league free agent outfielder Josh Kroeger, who was recently released from Boston's triple-A team, and assign him to Gwinnett. And just so everyone can breathe easier, Miguel Batista was also officially assigned to Gwinnett.
