According to the New York Daily News, two baseball executives said yesterday that Braves GM John Schuerholz was planning to meet with Billy Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, this week.
Whether or not this is a serious meeting remains to be seen. What we do know is that with Rafael Furcal slipping away, there will be more cash to go around. The problem is that the Braves will most likely need to commit to at least a 4 year deal. With BJ Ryan signing a 5 year $47 million deal with the Blue Jays this week, the closer market has been set. Will the Braves pay Billy Wagner $40 million over 4 years? I'd like to hope, but I have my doubts.
Still, John Schuerholz does have a way of coming up with some creative moves. So until we hear otherwise, I'll put my faith in the GM.
