In a bit of a surprise Baseball America has ECU’s stud pitcher, Gavin Williams, dropping to Atlanta at 24. Gavin was a stud prep arm back in 2017 where he was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays but he didn’t sign with the team and decided to head to East Carolina University where he really blossomed.
Gavin is a massive pitcher, coming in at 6’6” 238 pounds and has a four pitch arsenal - fastball, slider, changeup, curveball. His fastball, and slider are his calling card with a fastball that can reach triple digits whenever he wants. His changeup and curveball still need some work but there is a lot to like about what he can do on the mound.
Gavin appeared in 15 games this year, and started 12. He finished the season with a 1.88 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 14.39 K/9, and a walk rate of 2.23 per nine. He becomes the latest pitcher that has been mocked to the Braves at 24 including Bubba Chandler, Will Bednar, Michael McGreevy, Ky Bush, and most commonly Ryan Cusick. It’s clear the industry experts believe the Braves will go pitcher, and most likely college pitcher, but where do you see the Braves going?
