UT Men's Swimming Wrap-Up
After watching Michael Phelps' great 8 run, I wanted to take a moment to point out the Longhorn swimmers' successes in Beijing.
First off, Aaron Piersol and Brendan Hansen helped Phelps with his 8th final, swimming the backstroke and breaststroke legs of the 4 x 100 IM relay, respectively. Furthermore, Piersol took gold in the 100 back and silver in the 200 back. Hansen finished a (relatively) disappointing 4th in the 100 breast. Both Hansen and Piersol looked slugging in their prelims, but Piersol stepped it up in his finals. And both come back with Olympic Gold.
Garrett Weber-Gale comes home with a Gold in hand, courtesy of Jason Lezak's amazing comeback swim in the 4 x 100 free. If you watch the replay, Weber-Gale is the one who sweeps underneath Phelps' arm during the celebration. He swam the free leg in the 4 x 100 medley relay prelim. Weber-Gale also raced in the 50 free and 100 free and made it to the semi-finals in both.
Ricky Berens also helped Phelps pull in a relay Gold by swimming the third leg of the 4 x 200 free. He may have been the weakest link in that team, but seeing as how his three teammates were Phelps, Ryan Lochte, and Peter Vanderkaay, I'd say that's still a compliment, as Berens was able to turn in such a prolific time in that absolutely dominating victory.
Ian Crocker swam the 100 butterfly and came in 4th. He was a hundredth of a second off the bronze winner, just as Phelps was a hundredth of a second ahead of the silver medalist. Interestingly, Crocker still holds the world record in the 100 butterfly, the only world record that Phelps did not break in Beijing. Crocker also swam the butterfly leg in the 4 x 100 medley relay prelim (I believe he gets a Gold medal for this, even if he doesn't get to stand on the podium).
Scott Spann finished 6th in the 200 breast. I don't recall seeing and couldn't find any info on Dave Walters.
Obviously, these Olympics belong to Michael Phelps, but congrats to all the Longhorn men's swimmers, as well as to Eddie Reese, who did a phenomenal job training these guys. Hook 'em, and go USA!

BKB Recruiting News: Orton, Wall, Hamilton
- As to what schools he would like to visit, (John) Wall listed Memphis, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas and Kentucky. He also mentioned another school. "Jordan Hamilton is probably going to Texas, and he wants me to put them back in the mix," Wall said.
- Daniel Orton is down to six schools — Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas, Ohio State and Kentucky. The Wildcats are his early favorite. "I'm really interested in Kentucky and their program," said Orton. "I've known the coaches for a long time. Coach (Billy) Gillispie recruited my brother, and (Assistant) Coach (Glynn) Cyprien coached him at Oklahoma State."

Ross, Griffin, progressing nicely
Boy, that's a pretty good looking draft after one year, which will look even better if Russell and Quinn turn out to be top-flight QBs. Time will tell, of course, but it's interesting to see so many success stories so soon.
Lombardi calls Ross a "star," and expects Griffin to have a "big year."
"Aaron Ross, CB, Giants (No. 20): After playing well as a rookie, he looks even more confident and poised this year."
"Michael Griffin, S, Titans (No. 19): Settling on a position (at safety) will help him and he'll be able to use his speed and athletic ability to make more plays. The Titans need him to emerge."

Texas MBB 18th in ESPN Rankings
From the article: The arrival of Tom Penders in 1988 turned around a program that was mediocre for a decade. The run under Rick Barnes this decade (seven 20-win campaigns, two 30-win seasons and 10 straight NCAA tourney appearances, including the 2003 Final Four) puts the Longhorns in the Top 20.

SI Declares: A&M Beats out UT in '07-'08 season
You know who's directly above us? Princeton. Yikes.
We sit at 15, while the Ags are at 11.
Number one with a bullet is Arizona State. No other Big XII schools are in the top 25, although Baylor, Kansas, OK State, and OU are honorable mentions, in that order.
