Minor League Report 8/11

I figured I'd do this since yondaime has disappeared. So lets get started from the top...

Richmond 4, Durham 2

  • Lillibridge, SS: 2/4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 SB
  • Reyes, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
  • Ring, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB

No one really stood out for Richmond tonight, it was a team effect. Lillibridge is still only hitting .221, thats very worrisome. Jo-Jo had a pretty bad outing, with all the walks. Ring was a horror show but lucked out

Mississippi - Off

Myrtle Beach 9, Salem 5

  • Campbell, 3B: 3/5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B
  • Meija, 1B: 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI
  • Rohrbough, SP: 6 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Eric Campbell fell a homer short of the cycle and has his OPS creeping towards .900. Bad attitude or not, you can't ignore that. Rohrbough's debut at the Beach can be considered a mild success, as his strikeouts stay up, and the walks stay down.

Rome 9, Hagerstown 6

  • Heyward, OF: 2/5, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • Freeman, 1B: 2/3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • Coe, DH: 2/4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI

Chad Rodgers was just cruising along, then all hell broke loose in the third, and he couldn't get out. Heyward & Freeman are both around .900 with their OPS, and Heyward is still playing off his scorching July. A tip of the cap to the bullpen, who allowed 5 hits and 1 run in 6 1/3.

Danville 3, Kingsport 2

  • Parra, OF: 2/4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI
  • Clemens, SP: 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 4 BB, 6 K

Great start from Paul Clemens, and all his peripherals are looking great so far. Camilo Parra's pair of doubles and runs are all the offense the Braves need tonight.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Indians 3

  • DeVall, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
  • Brooks, 2B: 4/5, 1 3B
  • Hiller, OF: 2/4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI

BRETT DEVALL SIGHTING! He pitched well but was obviously on a pitch count. Bullpen did well in relieving him. Robert Brooks did a great job getting on base for the meat of the order, but they couldn't drive him in once. Layton Hiller has been struggling this offseason, but powered the Braves tonight.

Where is Devall?!

He hasn't pitched in like 2-3 weeks, and I can't find any news about him. Is he hurt? Resting his arm? Assigned to minor league camp? Does ANYONE know?

So, who's starting Friday?

It was supposed to be Reyes, but he got sent down...and I'm pretty sure he can't get called up for 15 days. I have this nagging, disgusting feeling its going to be either Bennett or Carlyle...which pretty much makes me want to vomit. Maybe they'll DFA Ring and bring up SUCK AND CHUCK! Or maybe Brian Lawrence. Or Matt DeSalvo. Or better yet, Damian Moss.

Kill me. In a perfect world, one of the kids from Mississippi will get a chance to show their stuff. But I doubt it.

Who should replace Cox?

After another spectacular job at managing the bullpen today, I thought about how much I feel Bobby should retire because he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing anymore. That 5th inning should have never happened because A) Mike Hampton shouldn't have pitched into the 5th, B) Ring shouldn't have replaced him as he's not even our best LOOGY, and C) Boyer shouldn't have come in until later if at all because he pitches every fucking game and is clearly going on fumes right now. I'm convinced if we had someone new running the ship, stupid shit like this would happen less frequently. Frank Wren is also to blame here, for constructing an outfield that has half as many homers combined as Adam Dunn alone has, and a bench full of slap hitters that wouldn't know what a fucking longball was if they studied old commercials of Maddux & Glavine.

What it all comes down to is that I feel there are really only 2 guys in the organization that can replace Cox, and those are Pendleton, and Snitker. Snitker managed all the kids down in Mississippi and has their respect, while TP just has a great knowledge of the game.  Thoughts from anyone else?

Tim Hudson talk

On another non-baseball board I post on, some guys have mentioned they've heard talks about Hudson going to the Cubs, and (probably a rib) Milwaukee. Has anyone heard a WORD about this? MLBTR and all the rest of the crew haven't mentioned a word about Hudson. I think trading HUD would be the absolute stupidest fucking thing the Braves could do, and would likely cause me to throw eggs at Frank Wren's private box when I go to ATL next month.

What ONE WORD would you use to describe this homestand?

There are plenty of them, to describe a 3-4 homestand where every game we lost, we had a legitimate chance to win and move within striking distance of first place. Instead, we're sitting at .500, 6 and a half out, in 3rd place, half a game up on the 3rd place team. So...what ONE SINGLE ADJECTIVE do you wanna use to describe what's transpired over the past week? Personally, my word is "nauseated". Because thats how I feel right now. Absolutely sick to my stomach.

One BIG problem: the bench!

Right now, we're rolling with a FOUR MAN BENCH. For one, this is a huge mistake, since it pretty much guarantees that if someone has a nagging injury and someone else gets a day off, our bench if magically cut in half, and Bobby can't PLAY THE MATCHUPS like he looooooooves doing. Secondly, look at the 4 guys: Miller, Norton, Gotay & Infante. 2 of them are hitting in the .260 range. Not horrible. One of them is in the .150 range. Blegh. 1 is BELOW that. YARGH. Another thing. Guess how many dingers these guys have? As many as I do! Guess how many XBH? FOUR, an average of one every 30 AB. By contract, even the slumping Mark Teixeira and Jeff Francoeur getting one every 10 AB. Sure 3 of the 4 are posting decent walk rates. But all thats saying is "we don't trust you to drive in a run, we trust you to be driven in". This is why I think a player like Borchard on the bench could help. He can drive in runs. He's "a big cocksucker that can hit the ball out the ballpark" (TM Earl Weaver). We don't need any more of these little punch & judy slap hitters. Thats why it was such a shame to replace Prado with Infante: The difference seems menial, but there was still a difference there. One of those guys needs to be DFAed when Prado comes back. I'm getting dizzy now.

The Towel is no more =(

So I dunno if any of you talked about it in the game thread today, but its official: our favorite pitcher of the season, the Legendary Towel, the human gas can, the man they call REITSOP, Chris Resop, has been DFA to make room for BUDDY CARLYLE, coming off the DL. I have this nagging feeling that he's going to make it through waivers, go to Richmond and steal innings from one of the guys there, and SOMEHOW get a roster spot in September. Nothing like THE TOWEL pitching in an important game near the end of the year.

What is YOUR favorite Chris Resop moment? I've got a few...one was during the spring, how Wren & Bobby kept talking about how well he as throwing the ball and how he had "a great arm". Another good moment was when Bobby used him in  4-run game against Colorado in April, and the Towel proceeded to allow 5 runs in 2 innings and effectively cost us the game and to force us to lose to MARK REDMAN because our bats woke up near the end of the game and we closed the deficit.

So who's gonna take Resop's role as mop-up guy? I think the concept of Royce Ring throwing to lefties AND righties in a double digit game is just too hilarious to pass up.

Did Dusty Baker F@&k US?!?!

So we're playing the Reds next weekend, and were expected to miss both Volquez AND Harang. However, last night, both of them got work in: Harang for 4 innings, and Volquez for 2. Is he gonna have to push their starts back now, so we get to face him? Because that would REALLY, REALLY piss me off.

I can deal with us facing Cueto, who we're scheduled to see, because he's been all over the place lately. Arroyo is also a plus, and for the life of me, I can't remember their #5. Fogg? Regardless, would rather face the 3-4-5 than either of the 1-2.

PENA DFA?!?!?!?!?

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080523&content_id=2754381&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl

Are you fucking KIDDING me? This is stupider than the Cox extension. How in the name of all that is holy can you DFA an average defensive catcher with a decentish bat to keep a VETERAN~! who "calls a great game" that is hitting 4 times less than his weight right now? This is unfuckingbelievable. I really hope a playoff team picks Brayan up and makes him a starter and he gets a huge deal. He deserves so much better than this shit.
