Chipper's not happy!

"I was going to withhold comment until the announcement of my signing with a new team, but I now feel the need to clear up any misconceptions and inaccuracies about the contract negotiations between myself and the Atlanta Braves," [John] Smoltz said. "There were large discrepancies between the offer from the Braves and offers from other teams."

Smoltz, Braves differ on contract offer | MLB.com I guess Smoltz doesn't like this "homeboy upstairs" either. I'm still kind of miffed at both sides that so much is being made about this being difference in money. I guess the Braves position was that they thought Smoltz would think there was more at stake than money, and would therefore take less. Smoltz didn't see it that way.

Here we go again. Though the article has no specifics, so I wouldn't read too much into the headline. Here is an interesting quote near the bottom of the article: Only two pitchers in big-league history – Hall of Famers Walter Johnson and Ted Lyons – had pitched their entire careers with one team for as long as 21 years. Smoltz could have become the third, but instead is choosing the career arc followed by Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, who pitched 21 seasons for the Braves before signing as a free agent with the New York Yankees. Shame... but then again, we really didn't hold it against Niekro.
