Could Murton be an Outfield/Bench Option?

Over at MLBTR there is a strong sense that outfielder Matt Murton is available since the Cubs acquired Reed Johnson earlier this week. Dierkes seems to write off the Braves as potential suitors, saying that Diaz is the guy in left, and while that is true, the Braves want a power bat with some experience off the bench -- and Murton would likely fill that role.

Add to that two factors that have historically attracted the Braves to players, (1) Murton went to high school in the Atlanta area (Eagles Landing in McDonough), and (2) with only two and half years of service time he's priced just right for the Braves modest payroll that still wants to have payroll flexibility to possibly add someone mid-season.

Matt Murton is a very similar hitter to Diaz in the numbers he puts up -- not quite as good average wise, but he probably has more power. For whatever reason, Lou Pinella never seemed to take to the red headed outfielder and the Cubs seem to constantly find reasons to bring in other options in the outfield year after year.

Chicago is apparently looking for left-handed relief pitching and we may still have Royce Ring available, which may be a good fit (though it would be rather ironic since they traded us their main lefty relief guy in Ohman over the winter). The Braves would still have depth at the lefty relief stop with Jeff Ridgway and Francisley Bueno in the minors and the hopeful return of Mike Gonzalez sometime around the All-Star break.

Eh
I would fully support this is Murton was a lefty for platoom purposes because a Diaz/Murton righty/lefty platoon would be a .290/.360/.500, 25 HR stud. But Murton is basically Matt Diaz with more extreme platoon splits. I think he's overkill for our bench spot and I don't think he's played first base at all, which would kind of lead me to believe the Braves wouldn't be terribly interested.

All that said, if we could get him for Ring and someone minor I'd be in favor as Murton would certainly be one of the best "9th men" in the NL. I think the Cubbies are trying to deal him into a starting or at least platoon role.

a subject for your comment
I don't think Murton's that much more powerful than Diaz, especially when you consider Murton has played all his home games at Wrigley Field.  Plus, I think he's not any better defensively or any faster than Diaz.  I'd rather give that roster spot to the loser of the Blanco/Anderson battle, or keep an extra lefty in the pen, than trade for a Diaz wannabe.

Murton: 28 HR in 830 ABs
Diaz: 21 HR in 774 ABs

He also went to Georgia Tech.

What about Ryan Freel
He may not have the pop that Murton has, but he has speed, and essentially has played all over the place in his career

Murton
I think that they should try to get him because although he may or may not have as much power as Diaz, they could use someone with decent pop on a bench that isn't Scott Thorman. Even if he hasn't played 1B a lot, he might prove good enough that him and Pena could share backup duties at first (and eventually also share with Infanta) so that Thorman wouldn't be on the team.

He's more experienced than Prado
and if there is one thing we have noticed with Wren is that even though the young guy deserves a shot (Schafer) he would have rather have experience (Kotsay) playing in 08 because we are shooting for the WS.

Anyone notice today that Petah Gammons picks a Braves vs Indians World Series?

Gotay
I suppose I am a little surprised, because we have been sort of lead to believe by Wren's comments and DOB's speculations that something bigger than this was imminent.   I'm guessing Wren had several irons in the fire, but couldn't make the bigger opportunities work without giving up too much.

Gotay has a career major league BA of .258 in 624 ABs.  To my way of thinking, Gotay is fairly similar to Martin Prado, except Gotay is a switch hitter with a little more major league experience.  Gotay has played a little bit of SS and 3b, but he is mainly a second baseman with limited range.  It seems to me that his main value to the Braves is as a switch hitting PH.  It will be interesting to see if he can survive on the Braves' major league roster after Omar Infante returns from the DL.

Braves fan since 1958.

Yeah But...Thames?
Has anyone heard much more about Marcus Thames? I hear his name thrown around this week and it doesn't seem likely but is it a possibility?

I at least know more about him than Murton.
