Braves FanFest = Long, Long Lines

I took some time this afternoon to stop by the Braves Winter FanFest and check out the goings-on. Right away I could tell this was going to be a much bigger production than they have ever put on in the past, and it sure was (see picture 1 above). There were a ton of interactive games, even some with Braves players pitching to fans. On one side of the exhibit hall there were a bunch of baseball card and memorabilia dealers with a strong focus on current and former Braves players (see picture 3 below). And of course there was plenty of food and beer to be bought (see picture 2).

The other thing there was plenty of were lines - really, really long lines for autographs. Don't go to FanFest expecting to get in and out of there with an autograph in an hour or two. Each of the two lines for autographs stretched from one end of the exhibit hall to almost three-quarters of the way to the other side (see picture 4 below), and that was before you had to get into a series of back and forth lines to get up to the autograph table (see picture 5). I asked people who were just about to go into the back and forth lines how long they had been waiting and the answer was anywhere from two and half hours to three hours (with the expectation that it would take at least another hour to get up to the autograph table). That's bloody ridiculous - I don't care whose autograph you're trying to get.

The real rock stars were the folks with a Premium Pass who could pretty much just walk right up to the front of the line through their own special line (see picture 6).

Overall I'm not sure this would be worth $15 or even $10. Kids seemed to be having fun with the interactive games and many people were enjoying the memorabilia stands, but there were some unhappy people in the autograph lines. There seemed to be enough dealers and exhibiters there that they could have made the FanFest free or less expensive. I say either lower the price for admission or move the thing back to Turner Field next year.

outraged is an understatement
We just got back, and wow, worst...fanfest...ever.  I actually feel fortunate, we stood in line for 3 hours and got matt diaz's auto. We then talked to some people this afternoon who stood in line for 6 hours and got charlie liebrandt and brian snitker.  Whoever thought of the "treasure Hunt" autograph system should be fired immediately.

Sucked!
This was a nightmare. I waited in the autograph line for 5 freakin hours, and I got Jair Jurrjens. Big whoop. Its a good thing I didn't buy a 2 day pass, because I am definitely not going back. I think everyone who planned this should be fired.

What other minor league players were there?

Very disappointed!
My family has been super excited about Fan Fest since the dates were announced.  As soon as we got to the fest today, approx 10:30, the lines for autographs were already very long, so I decided to bite the bullet, get in the line and wait while my husband took our boys around to the booths.  I waited 6 1/2 hours for an autograph and when I finally got in the cue portion of the line Chipper was signing.  I was so excited!  About 2 rows into cue Chipper got up and left as was replaed with Charlie Lebrandt.  My children were so disappointed.  The least the Braves could have done was replace Chipper with a CURRENT Brave!  I completely understand that Chipper could not stay all day, but for the wait lines to be 6 hours long, the least they could do was have CURRENT Braves signing at the end of those long lines.

To say I am disappointed is to say the very least.

One very disappointed Braves Fan who now has 2 children who are very confused as to why some "old bald man" wanted to sign their balls and caps.

Autographs..
I know not everybody can just scoot on down to Florida, but spring training was the best for us.  We went in February last year when pitchers and catchers reported.  No games, smallish crowds.  The position players were there on the back field and we couldn't go there, but everybody else was around.  In two trips there (a total of about 4 or 5 hours walking around), we got:
Tim Hudson, Brian McCann, Kelly Johnson, Bobby Cox, Buddy Carlyle, John Scheurholz, Scott Thorman, Pete Orr, Manny Acosta, Anthony Lerew, Peter Moylan, Blaine Boyer, Kevin Barry, and Jose Ascanio.
Now for a Braves fan, that wasn't a bad haul!  And I got a picture of my kid with every one of those guys.
You know, we used to be able to get autographs at games, but they've made that difficult now.  When we go, we are lucky to get anybody's autograph.  Even if somebody comes over to sign for a good 10-15 minutes, they usually can't get to everybody before the announcement is made for people to go away and the ushers start herding you off.
I don't really know what the point of this post was except to throw gas on the fire torching the fan fest.  I know autographs aren't everything, but for those of us who collect them, it would be nice if a trip to Florida wasn't a better alternative than going to fan fest!

fanfest was great if you got there early
For those that got there at a respectable time (8am est) Fanfest was great.  We entered among th e first 500 people and my wife and I went strait to different autograph lines.  We were able to get McCann, Francoeur, and Glavine right off the bat.  Don't sleep in next time guys.

Wow
That's a very nice haul - you were indeed one of the lucky few.

thanks gondee
Thanks!   I will be going back tommorow and getting through the gates early.  I got a hotel room tonight in douglasville so I didn't have to drive back home to Alabama.  Maybe I will get some similar luck tommorow.  The lines really aren't bad if you get in line to get in the door early.

Very disappointed.
I didn't like it at all either. I was in line and halfway up to the front when Mac and Frenchy got up. I was disappointed even though I saw them later in a conference with their dads for the baseball conference show thing they were doing as well. I did get Chris Resop and Will Ohman's autographs for the heck of it. Not many wanted theirs, though, so fans didn't want to get out of line since you were to wait in line, as was already mentioned in a comment, and you had no idea who was coming out next to sign. They had no intentions of telling you or telling who was even there that day. Everyone replied that "they didn't know."

After the conference thing ended, Jeff and Brian were trying to sign autographs, but the security was all but literally dragging them out of the auditorium because they had somewhere else to go. And my mom said she and my sister were told there would be no autographs as they were walking in before it started.

Also, my mom and sister had gone out of the auditorium before I did, I went to the stage trying to get their autographs and what not, like everyone else. I was able to pictures of them up close and with Jeff's dad, but that was it. My mom tapped Brian on the shoulder as he was walking down the hallway from the auditorium, knowing they would go out that way, asking for a quick picture with them. His reply was simply, "I'm very sorry, but we have to be somewhere. They've had us running all over the place all day. I'm really sorry." He was very nice about it. Of course, my mom and sister understood, but it's kind of bad when you can't sign people's autographs for fanfest. They had only signed autographs for an hour at the most earlier that morning and then took pictures with fans, but that line was just as bad as the autograph lines.

I don't know about the rest of the players, but I know they had Jeff and Brian all over the place, all day long. During the conference thing, they both looked like they were ready to go home and get that day over with.

But yeah, I was extremely diasppointed with how they did things. Too much other stuff and not enough player interaction for everyone. I will not bid $1000 just to get a pass to pass people in line to get autographs that you can get anytime you want by just asking them for one, that's rediculous. And nothing was cheap either. Pizza was $6+ for a personal pan pizza and drinks were $2+. The parts that had to do with Brian and Jeff were the best part, everything else pretty much sucked.

I'm writing a better review post, this was just my rant about the day, and will probably post it on my blog site (which is located on the my profile on here) when I'm finished writing it, I'll also post pictures as well, if anyone is interested in reading.

Also...
my mom and sister were able to get Glavine's autograph and picture. My sister also got more autographs, but mostly of people who were lesser known.

lol
in a conference with their dads

Their dads? WTF? That sounds hilarious.

Yes.
I got some pictures (some came out blurry though) and even a funny story that Frenchy's dad told about Heap. It was a really good conference, I wish was able to record it. I tried to on my camera, but their was a huge glare from where I was sitting in the second row. The conference thing was supposed to be a "How to make your son a major leaguer" or something like that. They talked about a lot of stuff and it was good. I'll include more about it in my review post on lj and my site as soon as I get it written and my sister sends me her pictures.

what what!
a funny story that Frenchy's dad told about Heap.

I'll be waiting with baited breath on that one.

Never again...
Alright, so last year's fanfest was freezing!!! But it was worth it, Got lots of great autograps(Mccann, Frenchy, Bobby Cox, Lenn Hubbard, Hudson, Chuck James, and a couple others)and had fun taking the tours, running the bases, and catching a pop-fly on their field!!!

This year's on the other hand sucked! We got their at like 10:00, got in line at 10:45, and ended up getting charlie liebrandt after freaking forever waiting?!?! There were some cool exibits and the interactive games were alright, but still.. I doubt I'll go to another fanfest ever again!!!

I'm starting to get the impression . . .
after reading here and on AJC.com, that about 90% of the  people at FanFest got Liebrandt's autograph. I think there were 5-10 Charlie Liebrandts at FanFest . . . or maybe ten lines that all led to the same table.

same
my story was very similar to yours.
had an amazing experience last year.
beat out the cold for some amazing autographs
this year just stayed in line for hours..
for charlie liebrandt.

overall, people were really ticked off to.
security was having trouble with people
standing in line and not moving until a "better" player
came up for autographs.
i hope there will be serious changes next year.

still not happy
Well we went back today, since i had pre-purchased 2 day day tickets.  It looked like there was not nearly as many people there today.  Apparently the Braves heard it from fans yesterday because they had a list to pass out of who was signing, which line, and the order.  But you still had no idea who you would get because they could and did change shifts at any time.  Tom Glavine started off, and went alot longer than he did yesterday.  But then after him was Buddy Carlyle & Jair Jurrjens.  Later to be joined/replaced by Brian Jordan & Zack Schreiber.  When people realized Teixeira was coming soon, there started to be a slowdown just like yesterday.  Some fans stopped completely and were letting people go past.  Security eventually caught on, and started forcing people through.  Luckily, we were far enough back that we got Teixeira.  But there were still alot of people that went home disapointed.  I will be writing a letter to the Braves, and i hope everyone else will be too.  They need to know just how terrible of an idea this "treasure hunt" was.  I liked all the interactive stuff, even though it wasn't for adults, the kids seemed to be enjoying it.  But there has to be a better way to do the autographs.

Day Two
Day Two was not as successful as day one.  But still, it was a fun time.  I met some pretty neat people with all that time to stand around, and was able to get a nice Autograph or two.  Day two resulted in a nice Scooter auto, and my wife got Jair.  The Glavine line was cut directly in front of her.  No big deal, she got Glavine yesterday.

I loved Fanfest!
I got the two day pass, and was absolutely glad I did!  I went with three of my friends (all of us are early 20's) and we still had a blast with the interactive games, and even went back multiple times for a couple.  I agree with everyone that the lines were long, and I guess we lucked out because when we were just about to get Brian Hunter's autograph on Saturday, he got up and left, which is when Chipper Jones sat down!!  I also sat and listened to Jeff Francoeur's kid story time and was able to get his autograph too!  The second day, we were able to get pictures with Pete Smith and Jair Jurrjens, then go get Greg Olsen's autograph, as well as getting some great pictures of Smoltz giving up a homerun to a kid in the Home Run Derby game!  Plus we walked away with all sorts of free stuff, like the DVD's of us as sportscasters and key chains and bags and memorabilia.  Maybe we got lucky, but I had a blast!
