Open Thread and Noc-A-Homa-Win-A-Lotta: Braves at Phillies (8/12)

Solid game last night. How wonderful is it to have a lefty out of the bullpen that can get lefties out. Ron Mahay was money in the fifth inning - that was huge. Wickman was also excellent in the ninth. I had all sorts of worries after we didn't score with the bases loaded and no outs in the top half of the inning, but Wickman did what he should do and shut the Phillies down.

Is it just me or does our team look like a bunch of gay lumberjacks sometimes?

Here's something they put up on the screen last night, Bob Wickman's home/road splits:

Split W L ERA G SV SVO IP H R ER HR HBP BB SO
Home 1 0 0.00 21 9 9 19.2 10 1 0 0 1 5 17
Away 1 2 7.40 24 10 15 20.2 32 18 17 3 1 11 16

I can't say anything other than, "that's hard to figure." I wonder if it's a comfort level or the mound at the Ted. It's very weird.

Anyway, it's yet another 8pm ESPN game tonight. I warn you, MUTE the tele!

Yeah, that picture kind of freaked me out. Do not touch Heap when you've got that look on your face, Wicky. Just don't.

Gay lumberjacks, indeed...
I said something to my roommate about this last night -- these boys are more huggy than any group of girls I've been around!  I won't lie, though...I wouldn't have minded being between McCann and Teixeira when Baby put his arm around Tex to supposedly keep him from falling over the railing.  ;)

Everytime Wicky gets the save, it's the same post-game celebration between him and Heap - but it's gotten less professional, more touchy-feely since last season.  It used to be Heap giving Wick the final out, and a handshake, but now it's handshake, ball, and hug.  Apparently, photographic evidence has revealed an additional slap on the rear. But yeah, gay lumberjacks are a possibility - i know i mentioned it before, but while reading "built to win," JS mentions team rules of "facial hair is allowed, but neat and cleanly."  From whose subjection?

But at least, it's not like the "let's all do the fu manchu" like Adam LaRoche did last season...

VV, you were right...
...a while ago when you said that the level of excitement can change suddenly between games.  After the series win against the Mets I felt like I was on top of the world, and that the division would be ours by the end of the month.  But after this series loss to the Phillies, I feel like we still have alot of problems.  It's probably just because I hate Moyer so much, and we can't seem to figure him out.

On a positive note, Francoeur's assists were pretty spectacular.  His late throw on the other hand...not so much.

by Smoltzs Beard on Aug 12, 2007 11:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Correct...
...late = last.

by Smoltzs Beard on Aug 12, 2007 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and I think it's an extension of how
the team behaves, really. Which kind of makes me mad sometimes. I know "excitement" doesn't win games, but the attitude shifts are so frequent (from a fan's POV, for what that's worth) -- I wish they could just stay confident for a little while.

And the Frenchy assists were a melodrama in themselves. I was telling my husband, you know what the last out is going to be if we ever win the World Series: a Frenchy assist to Heap at the plate. It's alllll been leading up to that since they were twelve.
