The Week of Living Sheepishly
On May 1st Chipper Jones hit two homeruns in a losing cause to the Philadelphia Phillies. Little did anyone know that those would be the last homeruns the Braves would hit for eight games - eight straight home games, at the second highest stadium in baseball. Andruw Jones' homerun in last night's game broke the drought.
The Braves were out-homered at home 8-to-0 during those eight games, but the amazing thing is they still won six of those eight games. That continues another trend this year of the Braves getting great pitching and timely hitting.
The particulars of the streak:
- 72 consecutive innings without a longball
- 276 at-bats without a longball
- It was the longest homerun drought for Atlanta since May 1983, when the team had a 13-game homerless streak
- It was the longest homerun drought in the majors since 1999, when the Marlins went 293 at-bats without a longball
- We went from leading the majors in homeruns to sixth in the majors in longballs
